Call For Participants: BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop

2014 Academy of Management Meeting in Philadelphia
    Saturday, August 2, 2014
    8:00AM - 12:00PM
Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel, Freedom E
    Coordinator: Ken Younge, Purdue University

The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2014 Academy of Management Meeting in Philadelphia. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertations and transitioning to their first academic positions. Pre-registration from students is required.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. The finalists for last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Birgul Arslan (PhD, HEC Paris), Rory McDonald (PhD, Stanford University), Lite Nartey (PhD, University ofPennsylvania), Ram Ranganathan (PhD, University of Pennsylvania), Natalya Vinokurova (PhD, New York University), and Ken Younge (PhD, University of Colorado).

In addition, several senior faculty members (the finalists' advisors/committee members) will discuss their perspectives on outstanding dissertation research. The format of the PDW will mix plenary presentations by senior faculty followed by Q&A's, and breakout discussion groups led by last year's finalists for the BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award. The following faculty members have agreed to participate in the workshop: Mary Benner (University of Minnesota), Jerker Denrell (University of Warwick), Witold Henisz (University of Pennsylvania), Riitta Katila (Stanford University), Melissa Schilling (New York University), Zur Shapira (New York University), and Tony Tong (University of Colorado).

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow for interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register athttp://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg The deadline to pre-register is July 30th, 2014, although space is limited so early registration is encouraged. In addition, please submit a brief survey of your dissertation research interests at http://goo.gl/jsYAxJ to help us organize the breakout sessions.
