Reviewing is a critical "professional responsibility" and an integral part of participating in the academic community (Trevino, 2008). Yet Tsang and Frey(2007: 129) noted that "there is no formal training for referees who usually pick up their review skills through learning by doing." This raises aperplexing question for doctoral students and junior faculty members: how can they develop critical reviewing skills when there are so few opportunities for doctoral students and junior faculty members to practice the art of reviewing? This professional development workshop (PDW) provides doctoral students and junior faculty with a rare opportunity to learn and practice the art of reviewing.Prior to the conference, doctoral students/junior faculty will be asked to prepare a formal review of an original submission of Scott DeRue's manuscript "A Quasi-experimental Study of After-event Reviews and Leadership Development" (DeRue, Nahrgang, Hollenbeck, & Workman, in press). Please note that this manuscript will replace the manuscript listed in the official conference program. The actual workshop will consist of two sessions: (1) a panel session and (2) an interactive session. The workshop will begin with Scott DeRue, who will provide background information about the original manuscript submission. Next, a panel session will provide participants an opportunity to gain key insights about quality reviewing from a former Editor, Associate Editor, and Editorial Board Member. Participants will then break into small groups, facilitated by an experienced faculty member, to discuss and receive feedback on their formal reviews. Jennifer Nahrgang will then discuss the actual reviews of the original submission and how they helped shape the final manuscript. Finally, the PDW will conclude with a question and answer period.
