This PDW focuses on the nature of open science and its implications for science-based business. Economists and management scholars have long understood that tradeoffs exist between the diffusion benefits associated with enhanced disclosure of new knowledge and the incentive benefits associated with stronger property rights associated with ideas. Recent changes in the extent of science-based businesses, the growth of open innovation systems, and recent debates regarding the effectiveness of the patent system have raised new questions about how to manage these tradeoffs in the academy, within firms, and at the firm-university boundary. The goal of this PDW is to bring together researchers studying open science in academia, in industry, and at the intersection of the two sectors. Presentations by scholars at the cutting-edge of research on open science and science-based business will set the stage for a discussion among presenters and participants, with the objective of collectively identifying and developing a structure for thinking about future research on these topics.
We look forward to seeing you in Montreal!
Henry and Jeff
