Date: Saturday, August 13, 2011
Time: 1:30 - 4:00 PM
Location: San Antonio Convention Center, Room 213B
This PDW is sponsored by the BPS Teaching Committee. It is intended to
support professional development of members of the BPS division in teaching
Strategic Management at the undergraduate, MBA, and executive MBA levels.
It should be appropriate for both new and experienced members.
The workshop will consist of two parts. The first part of the workshop,
which will be open to all academy members, will feature a panel discussion
among authors of three leading textbooks: William Hesterly (University of
Utah), Robert Hoskisson (Rice University), and Frank Rothaermel (Georgia
Tech). Each author will outline the intellectual framework that underpins
the textbook and will additionally be asked to address the questions, "What
knowledge should a first course in strategy impart? What skills and
competencies should a first course in strategy develop? How can these
skills and competencies be assessed? How do these differ according to
whether the target audience is undergraduates, MBA students, or
executives?"
The second part of the workshop will focus on the development of BPS
members' syllabi and will be open to pre-registrants only. In small groups,
the registrants will discuss their own syllabi in a moderated discussion,
highlighting best practices, including the organization and content of the
syllabi, the selection of cases and textbooks, exercises, and exams. Each
participant will be asked to spend 3-5 minutes discussing the logic of
his/her syllabus and will also be asked to bring questions to the group.
Please put this session on your calendar. Please pre-register if you are
interested in attending the roundtable syllabus discussion in the second
half of the session:
