ASIAN PERSPECTIVES ON CREATIVE INDUSTRIES: A workshop dedicated to emerging research on
creative industries in developing Asian markets

Hosted by Singapore Management University, Singapore June 7-8, 2013

    Conference Chair:
Ted Feichen Tsang, Singapore Management University, Singapore

    Program Co-ordinators:
Joseph Lampel, City University London, U.K.
Jamal Shamsie, Michigan State University, U.S.A.

The creative industries in Asia are a mix of old and new, local and global. Asian artistic traditions
that have given the world some of its finest art, music, and design, are now making their influence
felt in whole range of vibrant creative industries. From film to videogames, architecture to fashion,
and advertising to television, Asian firms are now producing some of the world’s best creative
products. Much of this ouput is produced for local consumption, but increasingly Asian creative
firms are establishing their presence globally, following in the path of Bollywood films, Japanese
    videogames, and Australian music groups.

As creative industries in Asia assume greater economic and social importance, they are attracting
increased interest from researchers in Asia and elsewhere. This conference is organized with the
purpose of forming a community of established and new researchers who are interested in studying
the growing importance of creative industries in Asia. It is intended to focus on the design,
production, marketing and distribution of creative products for Asian markets by firms that are
either based in Asia or are based elsewhere.

The conference will consist of paper sessions where researchers can present their work, and paper
development sessions where work-in-progress will receive feedback from researchers with
established research and publication record. We welcome paper proposals from researchers
everywhere who are already studying or are interested in studying creative industries in Asia.
Proposals should be limited to 750 words and should list whether the paper is intended for regular
paper presentation sessions, or paper development sessions. Names, affiliations and contact
information should be provided for all authors.

All proposals must be sent in Word format to shamsie@msu.edu by March 15, 2013. Notice of
acceptances will be sent out by early April. There is no registration fee for the workshop. We will
notify you of recommended hotels for your stay that will be available at a reasonable rate.
