Colleagues who use teamwork in their courses are invited to attend the PDW session described below on Saturday, August 4 at 10:15.  We will show how free, web-based tools can help instructors form teams according to criteria of their choosing, train their students on a research-based model of team-member contributions, and use self and peer evaluations.  This system allows instructors to implement good team management practices with a minimal time investment.

All who use teamwork in their classes or are considering incorporating teamwork into their classes are encouraged to attend this workshop to gain practical guidance for managing student teams effectively and efficiently. The workshop will demonstrate free web-based tools for implementing research-based guidance for supporting student teams. Attendees who bring an Internet-connected browsing device can try the tools first-hand. Team management issues to be discussed include assigning students to teams based on instructor-specified criteria, self and peer evaluation of team members' contributions to the team, rater training, and teamwork training. Participants will have the opportunity to share problems that they have encountered in using teamwork in their classes. The workshop facilitators will show how many common problems can be prevented or remediated using team management approaches that are made less time-consuming due to the capabilities of the CATME web-based team tools. Workshop attendees will learn how to upload a roster of their students, create on-line surveys to gather information from students, and use the Team-Maker software to assign students to teams based on criteria of the instructor's choosing. Attendees will also learn how to use CATME self and peer evaluation surveys to assess students' contributions to the team in five research-based domains and gather additional information about team processes. A rater calibration system to improve the accuracy of student ratings will be demonstrated. The workshop will conclude with a demonstration of a teamwork training system based on the research on training and teamwork. The system employs video examples of teamwork.
