This PDW introduces theory, data sources, and methods for examining the
growing phenomenon of interdisciplinary research and development (R&D).
In many industrial sectors ranging from cosmetics to electronics, advanced
R&D is requiring the dismantling of disciplinary barriers to pool the best
minds to push out the technological frontier. Those attending the session
will share a synopsis of their research projects so the group can
brainstorm on their next steps. The leaders of this PDW will frame the
discussion by briefly touching on: 1) the theory behind knowledge pooling;
2) data sources targeting this line of inquiry such as NanoBank, COMETS,
the NSF’s Survey of Doctorate Recipients, the ISI Web of Science, and
PubMed; and 3) research methods that have been employed. The methods will
include qualitative and quantitative approaches. The intent is to foster
a dialogue among workshop participants to share insights regarding theory,
data, and methods to produce actionable research roadmaps.
