Dear BPS Division Members,
Many thanks to everyone who participated in the recent BPS Division elections to select the new Assistant Program Chair for 2012-2013 and six new Executive Committee (EC) members who will replace those EC members whose terms expire in August 2012. The strong commitment and desire among our membership to shape the future of our Division was reflected in a voting participation rate for the BPS Division that exceeded the Academy-wide average. All of the nominees who agreed to run for office deserve our heartfelt thanks - all have a history of stellar service to our Division, and we very much appreciate their willingness to put themselves forward for consideration for these important roles.

Assistant Program Chair-Elect:
Alfonso Gambardella (PhD, Stanford 1991) was a member of the BPS Executive Committee from 2009 to 2011. He directs the PhD Program and is Professor of Business Administration at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. Alfonso's research focuses on business strategy, technology, innovation, industry structure and competition. His work has appeared in Management Science, Organization Science, Research Policy, the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, the European Management Review, Industrial and Corporate Change, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and the Journal of Industrial Economics. His MIT Press book called 'Markets for Technology' (with Ashish Arora and Andrea Fosfuri) has been widely cited. Alfonso has also written books published by the Cambridge and Oxford University Presses. In addition to refereeing for several management journals, he is Editor of the European Management Review, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Academy of Management Review, the Global Strategy Journal, Industrial and Corporate Change, Research Policy, and the Strategic Management Journal. He has also organized a number of academic conferences at Bocconi and elsewhere in Europe. His teaching interests span undergraduate, MBA and PhD programs. Alfonso participates in the AOM as a speaker in PDW, symposia, and paper sessions.
Incoming Executive Committee Members:
Kira Fabrizio (Ph.D. UC Berkeley) is Assistant Professor of Strategy & Innovation at Boston University's School of Management. Kira's research focuses on the intersection between firm strategy and public policy as it relates to innovation and technology adoption in general and in industry contexts including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries and renewable energy generation technologies. Her research has appeared in top management and economics journals, including Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, The American Economic Review, Journal of Law, Economics & Organization (JLEO), and Research Policy. Kira has contributed to the Academy of Management in a variety of roles, including serving as an elected Representative-at-Large in the TIM division, contributing and presenting at the BPS Doctoral Consortium, and organizing, presenting, and chairing many sessions.
Andrea Fosfuri (PhD, 1998, UPF) is Professor of Management at the Department of Business Administration of University Carlos III, Madrid, and has been visiting faculty at Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University and Bocconi University. He is an Associate Editor of Management Science for the Strategy Division, and editorial board member of the Academy of Management Review and the Strategic Management Journal. He has published in Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, Organization Science, Journal of Industrial Economics, Journal of International Economics, Research Policy, among others. His recent studies examine the internal organization of licensing activity, the interaction between product and technology strategies, the determinants and implications of "green" patenting, and the virtues and limitations of community-focused strategies.
Melissa Graebner (Ph.D., Stanford) is an Associate Professor of Management at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. She is also a Research Advisor to the Guanghua Leadership Institute at Peking University. She received her PhD in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, with a focus on strategy and organizations. Her research interests include mergers and acquisitions, interorganizational trust, corporate governance, and family business. She also has an interest in qualitative research methods. Her work has been published in Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal and Academy of Management Perspectives, and she received the 2009 Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management Journal. She sits on the editorial boards of Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, and Academy of Management Journal. She has previously been involved in the Academy of Management Annual Meeting as a presenter, doctoral consortium facilitator, session chair, and PDW organizer, and served as a panelist for the 2011 BPS Junior Faculty Consortium. She teaches in the areas of technology strategy and entrepreneurial management and has worked as a strategy consultant for Monitor Company and McKinsey and Company.
Anne Parmigiani (Ph. D., U. of Michigan) is an Associate Professor of Management at the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon. Anne's work explores firm boundaries, in particular concurrent sourcing (when firms make and buy the same good), and vertical interfirm relationships in a variety of contexts including metal stamping, casual dining, NFL football, and motorhomes. Her research has been published in the following outlets: Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Operations Management, European Management Review, Journal of Management Inquiry, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings, and Academy of Management Annals. Anne currently serves on the editorial boards of Strategic Management Journal, International Journal of Strategic Change Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, and the Journal of Management. Active in the Academy of Management since 2003, she has presented papers at the Academy for each of the last seven years, as well as being a session chair and/or discussant each year. She also has co-organized four PDWs for the BPS/TIM divisions and served as the BPS alliances and network track chair in 2009. In 2010, she was named as one of three Ascendant Scholars of the Western Academy of Management. She currently serves as a member of the Research Committee of the BPS division.
Sonali K. Shah (Ph.D., MIT) is an Assistant Professor and Buerk Fellow at the University of Washington's Foster School of Business. Sonali's research addresses issues at the intersection of Strategy, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, with a focus on understanding how user innovators contribute to technological change and industrial progress. Her research has appeared inManagement Science, Organization Science, the Academy of Management Journal, Research Policy,and other journals. Her research has received several awards, most notably the Alfred P. Sloan Industry Studies Foundation Fellowship, Thought Leader Awards from the Academy of Management (2008 and 2010), the Best Paper Prize from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (2006), and the Best Paper Award from the Kauffman Foundation (2010). She currently serves on the editorial board of Organization Science. She is a regular contributor to the Academy of Management meetings and has served the BPS Division as a Research Committee member, presenter, session chair, and symposium organizer. She has also served the academic community by chairing the Sloan Foundation's Early Career Committee and as an elected member of the AOM's TIM Division.
Giovanni Valentini (PhD, IESE Business School) is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at Bocconi University, Milan. He is interested in how innovation strategy and innovation management can lead firms to develop a sustainable competitive advantage. His work has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Research Policy, Strategic Organization, and Strategic Management Journal, among others. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management. He has been an active member of the Academy of Management since 2003, and in the past he has contributed to the BPS division as a reviewer, organizer of symposia and PDWs, and as an invited faculty member to the BPS Dissertation Doctoral Consortium. He is currently a member of the BPS Research
Committee (2010-2012).
