Social Issues in Management Division 2009 Doctoral Consortium

Academy of Management Annual Meeting, Chicago, IL

    August 6-7, 2009

    Co-chairs:

    Heather Elms, American University, elms@american.edu

Stephen Brammer, University of Bath, mnssjab@management.bath.ac.uk

All doctoral students working in the general area of social issues in management (SIM) – including but not limited to business ethics, corporate social responsibility, business and government – are invited to apply to participate in the Academy of Management 2009 Social Issues in Management Division doctoral consortium. In addition to students who focus on social issues, students whose primary area is outside of SIM but who also emphasize social issues (e.g., ethics or business and society relations) in their work are welcome.  SIM has a history of encouraging cross-fertilization with scholars from other divisions.

The consortium serves as an ideal opportunity for doctoral students to begin to converse about scholarship and teaching with a wider community of scholars in social issues in management beyond their Universities and doctoral programs.  A variety of top SIM scholars will participate as panelists and coaches, and participating students are typically drawn from a range of countries and backgrounds. While offering abundant networking opportunities, the consortium content focuses on developing research and teaching skills and strategies, and on achieving a balance between career and other dimensions of life.

The consortium begins on Thursday evening with opportunities to get acquainted with fellow participants and SIM scholars.  This session will be followed by a casual dinner in the city. Friday will be full of additional learning, with ample time for reflection and discussion.  We'll spend time in sessions devoted to the crafts of teaching and research. We will continue the tradition of pairing consortium participants with SIM scholars to provide feedback on students' research ideas.  We will also spend time reflecting and discussing early career issues such as managing the dissertation process, developing a research stream, choosing a job/university, and work-life balance.

To apply, students need to obtain a faculty sponsor and submit an application form. Applicants should ask that sponsoring faculty e-mail the consortium chairs with a one paragraph recommendation. In addition, students must submit an abstract describing their dissertation (no more than one page single-spaced).  Application forms and more information are available at the SIM website (http://sim.aomonline.org).  All submissions should be sent to Heather Elms at elms@american.edu AND to Stephen Brammer at mnssjab@management.bath.ac.uk.  While we will give priority to those students who are finishing their study and who have not previously attended a SIM doctoral consortium, we realize that students may benefit by attending a consortium earlier in their course of study and by attending more than once.  Therefore, we encourage applications from such students as well.

Space is limited, so it is essential to submit an application and recommendation no later than the deadline of May 8, 2009. We hope to see you in Chicago!
