    Consortia for BPS Doctoral Students

    The Executive Committee of the BPS Division announces our 2008 pre-conference activities for doctoral students: 1) the Dissertation Consortium for advanced doctoral students, 2) the traditional Doctoral Consortium, and 3) the Managing Your Dissertation Workshop.

    Similar to our 2007 admissions approach, we will work with doctoral supervisors from any school with a BPS-related doctoral program to help us to identify the best match for each doctoral student with each of these doctoral student events. While the decision regarding admission naturally rests with the individual consortium/workshop chairs, our goal is to make the BPS division's doctoral activities available to as many qualified doctoral students as possible. In concordance with this approach, doctoral supervisors are not required to rank doctoral students in order of priority for consortium attendance. For detailed information on how to register for any of the BPS division's doctoral activities, see the relevant Call for Participation, following the brief descriptions below.

    The BPS Dissertation Consortium
    This consortium takes place on Saturday of the PDW weekend. The consortium provides advanced students an opportunity to present shortened versions of their dissertation papers and receive in-depth feedback from a distinguished faculty panel. The consortium also offers opportunities for networking with faculty and fellow participants. Priority for admission into the Dissertation Consortium will be given to students who have not previously attended the regular BPS Doctoral Consortium. Any advanced doctoral student in BPS (who is not applying to this year's Doctoral Consortium) may apply.

    The BPS Doctoral Consortium
    This 2-day Doctoral Consortium (running Friday evening through Sunday noon) is oriented to best serve doctoral students at the proposal stage of the dissertation process. The objectives of the consortium are to support mid- to late-stage doctoral students as they shape and complete their dissertations, and to enhance their scholarship, teaching, and overall development.

    The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop
    This half-day workshop is scheduled for Sunday of the PDW program and is open to all BPS doctoral students (with pre-registration) except those attending the Doctoral Consortium. This workshop is run by the finalists of the 2007 BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award; the finalists' advisors also participate. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertation and transitioning to their first academic position. We encourage participants in the Dissertation Consortium to also sign up for the Managing Your Dissertation Workshop.

    Call for Participants: BPS Dissertation Consortium
    Saturday, August 9, 2008, 8:30 am-5:00 pm

    The BPS Dissertation Consortium will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2008 Academy of Management Meeting in Anaheim, California. This consortium, which complements the traditional BPS Doctoral Consortium, is intended for students who have defended their dissertation proposals and who will be on the job market during the 2008-2009 academic year (i.e., for jobs beginning Fall 2008).

    The Dissertation Consortium provides an opportunity for students to present brief summaries of their dissertation research to a distinguished group of faculty and twenty-five peers, and to receive feedback from this group in an informal setting. The co-chairs of the faculty panel for this year's Consortium are Nicholas Argyres (Boston University) and Michael Ryall (University of Melbourne). The faculty panel will be chosen to reflect the interests of consortium students.

    Priority for admission into the Dissertation Consortium will be given to students who have not previously attended the regular BPS Doctoral Consortium, but any doctoral student in BPS who expects to enter the job market and graduate during the 2008-2009 academic year (and who is not applying to this year's Doctoral Consortium) may apply. Interested doctoral candidates should apply via email to Nicholas Argyres at nargyres@bu.edu by April 30th, 2008.

    The application should include:
    1) a cover letter stating: a) that you are applying only to the BPS Dissertation Consortium (e.g. you are not also applying to the BPS Doctoral Consortium); b) a commitment to attend the BPS Dissertation Consortium if accepted; c) why the Dissertation Consortium is the best fit for you.
    2) the most current version of either your dissertation proposal or a paper from your dissertation;
    3) a current CV;
    4) a nomination letter from your dissertation chair; the letter should verify that the candidate is expected to enter the job market and graduate during the 2007-2008 academic year.

    Call for Participants: BPS Doctoral Consortium
    August 8-10, 2008

    The Business Policy and Strategy Division will sponsor a doctoral consortium during the pre-conference period of the 2008 Academy of Management Meeting in Anaheim, California. The objectives of the consortium are to support mid- to late-stage doctoral students in business policy and strategy as they shape their dissertations, to give them a chance to meet and interact with some of their future colleagues and to enhance their scholarship, teaching and overall development. To qualify for the consortium, a candidate must be in the proposal stage of his or her dissertation with plans to defend the dissertation proposal by September 30, 2008. The consortium will be held on Friday, August 8 from 6 pm to 9 pm, Saturday, August 9 from 8 am to 9 pm and on Sunday, August 10, from 8 am to noon.

    The 2008 consortium co-chairs are Kyle Mayer (University of Southern California), Michael Leiblein (The Ohio State University) and Cathy Maritan (Syracuse University). The faculty panel includes: Julian Birkinshaw (London Business School), Don Hambrick (Pennsylvania State University), Dawn Harris (Loyola University Chicago), Amy Hillman (Arizona State University), Sarah Kaplan (University of Pennsylvania), Marvin Lieberman (UCLA), Jeff Macher (Georgetown University), Jasjit Singh (INSEAD), Todd Zenger (Washington University).

    Interested doctoral candidates should apply in the writing by April 30, 2008 by submitting:
    1) a cover letter stating: a) that you are applying to the BPS Doctoral Consortium, b) your primary division of interest is Business Policy and Strategy, c) you commit to accept an invitation to only one doctoral consortium at the 2008 AOM meetings. Please also indicate in this letter the number years you have participated in your PhD program, your dissertation proposal defense date (on or before Sept. 30, 2008); and why the BPS Doctoral Consortium is the best fit for you.

    2) a summary/abstract of your dissertation proposal with 3-5 keywords identified at the end of the abstract (2 page maximum).

    3) a current CV.

    4) a nomination letter from your dissertation chair; the letter should verify that the candidate is working on his/her dissertation proposal and confirm the candidate's dissertation proposal defense date.

    Please email your application to Michael Leiblein at (leiblein_1@fisher.osu.edu). The preferred format for items 1-3 above is a single Word document, with the items presented in the order listed above and using the candidate's last name as the file name. Item 4 may be submitted as a separate document, by the candidate or by the dissertation chair. Any questions concerning the Consortium may be addressed to Michael Leiblein (leiblein_1@fisher.osu.edu) or Cathy Maritan (cmaritan@syr.edu). Participants will be notified of their selection in late May, 2008.

    Call for Participants: BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop
    Sunday, August 10, 2008, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

    The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2008 Academy of Management Meeting in Anaheim, California. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertation and transitioning to their first academic position. The workshop is scheduled for Sunday, August 10, 2008, 8:00 a.m.-12 noon. Pre-registration is required.

    The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. Finalists from last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Dries Faems (U. of Twente), Jared Harris (U. of Virginia), Robb Jensen (Brigham Young U.), Rekha Krishnan (Simon Fraser U), Alison Mackey (Cal Poly State U. - San Luis Obispo), Rajiv Nag (U. of Arkansas). In addition, several senior faculty members (the finalists' advisors) will discuss their perspective on outstanding dissertation research.

    If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

    Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register no later than July 1, 2008 at the new centralized PDW registration system on the Academy's website:
    https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg/logon.asp . The registration form on this website will require, among other things, a brief summary of your dissertation research interests. If you have questions, please contact Alison Mackey at mackey@calpoly.edu.
