For those of you interested in the overlap between experiments and organizational theory and strategy, we'd like to invite you to an informal social get together at the Academy of Management next month.
Experimenting (with Drinks) in Organization Theory
When: Sun, August 12, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Where: Clark Street Ale House - River North, 742 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60654, USA (map)
Description: Lots of excitement currently surrounds a more thorough exploration of the microfoundations of organizational theories, including in institutional theory, evolutionary economics, the behavioral theory of the firm, and other fields. The community seems to agree that we need to develop a better understanding of the cognitions, emotions, and behaviors of the individuals and teams that are the ingredients to more macro-level phenomena. We believe much promise rests in bringing experiments into this line of inquiry. Although sometimes thought of as "non-OTish," both landmark studies (such as Zucker 1977) and very recent investigations illustrate the unique advantages of experiments in studying micro-level phenomena, uncovering theoretical processes, and identifying causality. In realizing the full potential of experimental methods for studying issues at the heart of OT, we need to establish a community of peers that support each other and together develop the necessary experimental toolkit. This Cafe aims to add to this effort and offers a forum, for both the experimtnal newbie and the experienced lab rat, to engage in informal discussions over a couple of drinks.
Hosts: Oliver Schilke, University of Arizona; Vern Glaser, University of Alberta; Alex Bitektine, Concordia University
