    Dear Colleagues,

I am sorry to inform you that Mason A. Carpenter, age 50, passed away on September 22, 2011.
Mason received his Ph.D. at the University of Texas-Austin in 1997. Since that time, he has been
on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, most recently as Professor of Management
and the M. Keith Weikel Professor in Leadership. He was also the Associate Dean for evening and
    executive MBA programs.

Mason was a highly productive and impactful researcher, as well as an award-winning teacher. He
was also a tremendous citizen not only at UW-Madison, but in the field, serving as an Associate
Editor of the Academy of Management Review and as Chair of the Corporate Strategy and
Governance division of the Strategic Management Society (SMS). In 2010, he received the SMS
Outstanding Service Award. More importantly, Mason was a loving husband, father, and son, and
a wonderful friend, mentor, and colleague to many.

Mason?s wife Lisa and young sons Wesley (9) and Zachary (13) have lost him at the prime of his
life. Therefore, the most important thing that can be done now is to help provide them with some
peace of mind about their financial future. Accordingly, a memorial fund has been established that
allows anyone who is interested to help fund the college educations of Wesley and Zachary. If you
would like to honor Mason by helping ensure that his sons have the educational opportunities that
he wished for them, you may do so by contributing to the:
