    Jack Vanier Distinguished Chair in Innovation and Entrepreneurship

    The purpose of the Jack Vanier Distinguished Chair in Innovation and Entrepreneurship is to

    recruit and retain a recognized authority in the field of innovation-based entrepreneurship. The

    chair is endowed by private funds and is part of the State of Kansas Faculty of Distinction

    Program.

     

    Starting Date: August 2008

     

    Job Description: The holder of the Jack Vanier Distinguished Chair in Innovation and

    Entrepreneurship will serve as a regular member of the faculty in the College of Business

    Administration and will serve as a focal point for research and scholarly programs in the field of

    entrepreneurship. In addition to academic responsibilities, the incumbent will initiate and serve

    as the director of an institute focusing on innovation-based entrepreneurship. Academic duties

    include maintaining an active research agenda, teaching an average of two classes per semester,

    and serving on committees to enhance the operations of the college, university, and profession.

    An important component of the position is developing and maintaining programs in the field of

    entrepreneurship that will benefit students and practitioners interested in leading emerging

    technology-based organizations. This should involve developing and enhancing effective

    relationships with alumni, business persons, and colleagues through an advisory board designed

    to provide guidance about entrepreneurship research and programs through the proposed institute

    for innovation and entrepreneurship. The goal of the endowed chair in innovation and

    entrepreneurship will be to develop scholarly and practitioner programs that foster

    interdisciplinary collaboration using innovation-based entrepreneurship. The proposed institute

    will provide a coordinated program of in-class and experiential training that links faculty,

    graduate students, undergraduate students, and entrepreneurs together in a clinical program of

    teaching and research.

     

    The University and College of Business Administration: Kansas State University is a state supported

    institution of more than 23,000 students. The University is recognized for the quality

    of its academic programs and for consistently producing recipients of top national academic

    scholarships. The 668-acre main campus is located in beautiful Manhattan, Kansas (population

    approximately 50,000) a community nestled in the Flint Hills of Northeast Kansas. The College

    of Business Administration is one of 10 colleges on the main campus. The college, with 2,800

    undergraduate and graduate students and 58 full-time faculty members, consists of four academic

    departments: Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing. In addition to five

    undergraduate majors (Accounting, Finance, Management, Management Information Systems,

    and Marketing), the Master of Business Administration degree program offers a specialization in

    technology entrepreneurship designed to train future leaders of technology-based ventures. The

    College is accredited by AACSB International at the bachelor and master level in business

    administration and accounting.

     

    Innovation and Entrepreneurship Activities: Kansas State University has created and

    continues to build a unique focus with regard to creating innovations in the biosciences,

    agriculture, chemistry, and engineering. Notable accomplishments include the recent completion

    of a $54 million Bio-security Research Institute, the Food Science Institute, the Advanced

    Manufacturing Institute, and the National Institute for Strategic Technology Acquisition and

    Commercialization. There is a critical need at Kansas State University for a senior-level faculty

    member within the university who will be the regional leader in providing an integrated program

    of entrepreneurship teaching, research, and service focused on moving new technologies

    developed in Kansas and the central Midwest from innovation to commercialization. K-State as

    the land-grant university for the State of Kansas is at a critical time when scientists, engineers,

    business experts, students, faculty, and entrepreneurs are being brought together in teams for the

    development of clinical training programs, educational programs, and applied and basic research

    activities focusing on innovation-to-market entrepreneurship.

     

    Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree and demonstrated success in a field

    related to innovation and entrepreneurship with a proven record of excellence in research and

    teaching consistent with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor. Demonstrated

    experience with emerging innovation-based businesses is highly desirable. In addition, the

    recipient of the Jack Vanier Distinguished Chair in Innovation and Entrepreneurship should have

    strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to improving entrepreneurship education and practice

    in a diverse world, and evidence of experience with extramural funding processes.

    In the letter of application, candidates should address their history of scholarly interests,

    importance of their scholarship to the field of entrepreneurship, special reasons for justifying

    selection to the chair, and a description of service impacting the business and academic

    communities in the area of entrepreneurship. Documented evidence of strong scholarly and

    administrative skills is particularly desirable.
