    Hi Paul!

Jeff Katz has a mandatory consulting project for our MBA capstone (Kansas State) every semester; jkatz@ksu.edu if you would like to contact him further. We charge a modest fee for supplies, and usually have about 4 teams a semester.

I went through a similar experience at UT-San Antonio as an MBA, but there's been so much turnover there I'm not sure who's there and how it's being taught these days.

    Dear Paul,

At Flagler College, we have two strategic management courses: a business level strategy course (with cases usually assigned from the text or a case manual) and a corporate level course (which has the student teams work on "real world, real time" cases) I teach the corporate level course.

In the corporate level course, in some semesters the cases are chosen by the student teams; in other semesters industry is assigned and students pick a company in the industry; and some semesters, when I can recruit executives from a specific company to participate, the case company will be assigned. Last spring, an executive came to us to request that his company be the case study and used ideas presented by the teams. So, you could say we have done 'consulting' in a modest way, as well as field studies.

Companies chosen must be publicly traded so that as much information as possible is available to students for research. Since this is a corporate level course, the strategies involve diversification and integration of strategic businesses consistent with the existing corporate strategy of the case company.

If you think this example could be helpful, please feel free to contact me.

    Yours truly,
    Thomas DeLaughter

    Dear Paul - and others,

I teach about five sections each year [perhaps half of the sections] of
our undergraduate Business Policy (strategic Management) course at Morgan
State University. In my course I require that everyone complete a group
research project. These projects may be either a conventional academic
type paper or to research and write a teaching case about a real
organization, ideally using field research. (When I teach the graduate
course, my requirement is the same.) This produces some interesting
cases, some of which are presentable at case conferences and some are
    published.

    Dear All,

At the undergraduate Strategic Management level courses at Coastal Carolina University, we also require extensive "consulting type" projects developed by teams of students.  In addition, each student group serves as a mock board of directors" for the presentations of one of the other teams at the conclusion of the semester.  Teams are working on publicly traded companies, and we pick industries and help to identify firms from different sectors within those industries for work.

At the graduate level, in our MBA course Strategic and International Issues in Management, we incorporate simulation as a mandatory part of the curriculum, with strategic plan development and with end of semester evaluation papers and presentations based not only on intended strategy, but also on providing comprehensive evaluations of the process and decision making during the simulation, providing forward looking "would be" strategic plans for if the simulation had continued, and evaluating the learning process that had taken place during the simulation, on a game, team and individual level.

If these examples are at all of interest, please contact me.
