Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to our PDW entitled: The Dyad in Context: Developing & Managing a System of Vertical Partnerships to be held on Saturday, August 4 from 8:00-10:00 am in the Boston Hynes Convention Center, Room 204.
Why should you get up early for this? There will be a provocative debate regarding whether to consider organizational relationships as dyadic or as systems, stimulating panelist presentations, and a chance for you to discuss your work with stellar scholars in the field. Details are below.
Overall Description of the PDW: A focus on the transaction or single dyad is common across multiple theoretical frameworks traditionally adopted in the study of vertical relationships. While much has been learned from this narrow focus, there is the concern that our understanding remains incomplete since, in practice, it is relatively rare for a dyad to exist in isolation. Rather, most dyads are embedded, interdependent elements of a broader system of interactions. Examples include franchise systems, project networks, buyer cooperatives, and supply chains. The open questions, and ones we seek to debate and discuss in this session, are what are the costs and benefits of a dyadic focus? How can theories that typically take the dyad as the unit of analysis be expanded to account for these phenomena? What empirical issues need to be considered when taking this approach? We will explore these questions through a DRUID-style debate between senior scholars, a panel discussion on theoretical and empirical topics, and roundtable breakout sessions among the participants.
Our debate teams are Joe Mahoney (U of Illnois) & Michael Leiblein (Ohio State U) vs. Ranjay Gulati (Harvard U) & Jackson Nickerson (Washington U).
Our panel discussants include Kyle Mayer (U of Southern California), Beverly Tyler (North Carolina State U), Laura Poppo (U of Kansas), and Thomas Mellewigt (Freie U of Berlin)
We hope to see you there – we promise it will be worth getting up for :->
Warm Regards,
Anne Parmigiani (U of Oregon) & Janet Bercovitz (U of Illinois)
