The Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park
invites applications and nominations for a tenured or tenure track professor
position in the strategy and entrepreneurship area. The rank for the
position is open. We seek candidates with a deep commitment to research and
teaching and invite applications from scholars interested in any sub-domain
within the strategy and entrepreneurship field, broadly construed.

The Robert H. Smith School of Business (www.rhsmith.umd.edu) is recognized
as one of the world’s leading business schools for its strong track record
in both research and teaching. The school is also known for a highly
collaborative culture at the faculty as well as student levels. Within the
business school, the Management & Organization department is particularly
proud to be viewed as one of the strongest departments (please visit
http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/management to learn more about the M&O faculty
and http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/strategy/ for information on the “Strategy
Research Group” which also includes faculty from other departments with a
core interest in the field of strategy). We expect our new hire to help make
an already strong M&O department and the broader strategy group even
    stronger.

The Management & Organization (M&O) department at the Smith School of
Business, The University of Maryland, consists of 25 core faculty, including
tenure-track professors and Tyser Teaching Fellows. The group’s interests
and responsibilities cover the following areas: strategy, entrepreneurship,
globalization, organizational behavior, and human resources.

Research excellence serves as the foundation of the M&O department. An
analysis of publications in the most prestigious strategy, OB, and HR
journals indicates that, on a worldwide basis, M&O has consistently ranked
among the top 5 departments in the world. Some other indicators of the
strength and scholarly reputation of M&O faculty include: (a) eight
Fellows, including past Dean of Fellows, of the Academy of Management; (b)
two Past Presidents as well as a forthcoming President of the Academy of
Management; (c) several past and present members of the board of governors
of the Academy of Management; (d) six University of Maryland Distinguished
Scholar-Teachers; (e) multiple editorships and editorial board memberships
on highly prestigious academic journals; and (f) multiple best paper awards
from prestigious journals and academies. M&O also has a vibrant PhD program
which is getting stronger each year. Some of the schools where PhD graduates
from the M&O department are currently serving as faculty include: Harvard,
Dartmouth, Connecticut, Cornell, Indiana, Rice, Virginia, Wisconsin-Madison,
UT-Austin, Minnesota-Twin Cities, Vanderbilt, Toronto, Instituo di Empressa
(Spain), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

M&O faculty also believe in excellence in teaching. Over the last several
years, as a department, M&O faculty have earned the highest average teaching
ratings across all departments every single semester. It is our belief that,
aside from having a group of excellent faculty, part of the explanation for
why M&O excels at both research and teaching has to do with a culture of
collaboration where colleagues are expected to foster intellectual synergy.
It is our hope that we will be able to continue this cultural strength as we
    become a larger group.

The Smith School has leading edge MBA and undergraduate programs, a rapidly
expanding portfolio of executive education programs including EMBA programs
in both the US and China, as well as a strong doctoral program. In the most
recent surveys, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Smith Undergraduate
Program as #19 (Management as #10) while Financial Times ranked the Smith
MBA Program as #20 in the U.S.

Given the Smith School’s location in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area,
faculty and staff at Smith enjoy not only a strong institutional environment
but also the pleasures of living in a vibrant and leading global city which
is very cosmopolitan, rich in world-class museums and the performing arts,
architecturally delightful, full of greenery with the beautiful Potomac
River flowing right through the city, within one to two hours of driving
distance from not only beaches but also ski slopes, and home to some of the
country’s best public and private schools. For additional information,
please visit the department’s website at
    http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/management.

We seek candidates with a deep commitment to research and teaching and
invite applications from scholars interested in any sub-domain within the
strategy field, broadly construed. We are particularly interested in
candidates who work at the intersections of different sub-domains within the
larger strategy field, such as scholars who take a strategic orientation to
    entrepreneurship and/or globalization.

For full consideration, we encourage applicants to submit a complete set of
materials by Monday, October 15, 2012. Candidates should send a CV
(including three references) and a sample research paper together with a
brief cover letter highlighting their specific strengths relative to this
position. Nominations of qualified candidates will also be appreciated.
