    AMD PAPER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

    IACMR 2018 CONFERENCE, Session 20A

    School of Economics and Management,

Room A115/1177 - Wuhan University. Wuhan, China
    10:00 AM to 12:00PM, June 17, 2018

Academy of Management Discoveries (AMD) -- the journal for empirical exploration in management and organizations – will be holding a short paper development workshop at the IACMR conference in Wuhan, China on June 17, 2018

    About the Workshop:

This event will include a presentation by AMD's editor,  Peter  Bamberger, as well as hands-on paper development discussions with Peter and SHI, Junqi, AMD Associate Editor.

In the first hour of this workshop, Peter will contrast abductive reasoning (i.e., inference to the best plausible explanation, and the form of reasoning underlying research published in AMD) to the hypothetico-deductive model dominating management research, and will argue that it also serves as the under-recognized (and often maligned) basis upon much of what we do as management scholars. He will also discuss the three types of situations for which such an approach may be most suitable, namely to:

    ·         Surface significant new or emerging phenomenon using any number of empirical approaches including rich description, quantitative construct validation, and/or empirical taxonomic analyses.

    ·         Identify and explore surprising relationships using rigorous qualitative and/or quantitative methods in order to develop plausible explanations for those relationships and provide a grounded basis for innovative theorizing.

    ·         Leverage original, secondary or "big" data and any number of alternative approaches (including lab and field/quasi-experiments, meta-analyses and replication studies) in order to offer empirically-driven insights into and/or a plausible resolution of critical anomalies and discrepant findings.

He will also review how such research is reviewed, evaluated and constructively developed when submitted to Academy of Management Discoveries.

    Roundtable paper development session:

Bamberger and Shi will provide one-on-one feedback on papers that authors are considering for submission to Academy of Management Discoveries

Discussions will focus on framing, methodological rigor, empirical follow-up, interpretation, and specifying directions for down-the-road theorizing

    REGISTRATION

Pre-registration and submission of papers in advance is NOT required.

Those wishing to have their paper or paper idea discussed should prepare a short (no more than 3 minutes) verbal description of their research for presentation before other participants in the round-table.  Supporting documents may be distributed at the author's discretion.

The presentation should provide a synopsis of the research question, its relevance and significance, a statement relating to the limited ability of extant concepts and/or theory to provide a coherent response to that question, the empirical approach, and the implications of the findings for down-the –road theorizing.
