2013 Academy of Management Conference Lake Buena Vista (Orlando)
    Saturday, Aug 10 2013 3:15PM - 7:15PM
WDW Swan Resort in Swan 4

The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop is offered as a pre-conference
activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2013 Academy of Management
Meeting in Lake Buena Vista (Orlando).

The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical
advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertations and
transitioning to their first academic positions. Pre-registration from
students is required. Boxed lunches and snacks will be served.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be
able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. The
finalists for last year’s BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the
coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Punit Arora (City U. of
New York; Ph.D. Syracuse U.), Exequiel Hernandez (Washington U. in St.
Louis; Ph.D. U. of Minnesota), Amol Joshi (U. of Hawaii; Ph.D. U. of North
Carolina), Bo Kyung Kim (Southern Methodist U.; Ph.D. U. of Michigan), David
Kryscynski (Brigham Young U.; Ph.D. Emory U.), Tomasz Obloj (HEC Paris,
Ph.D. INSEAD), Paul Seaborn (U. of Denver; Ph.D. U. of Toronto).

In addition, several senior faculty members (the finalists’
advisors/committee members) will discuss their perspectives on outstanding
dissertation research. The format of the PDW will mix plenary presentations
by senior faculty followed by Q&A’s, and breakout discussion groups led by
last year’s finalists for the BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award.

The following senior faculty members have agreed to participate in the
    workshop:
Russ Coff (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Ravi Dharwadkar (Syracuse
University), Brian Silverman (University of Toronto), Metin Sengul (Boston
College), Aks Zaheer (University of Minnesota)

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend.
Small group discussion will allow for interaction of people at similar
stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee,
    (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues
associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job
talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the
    dissertation into papers for publication.

Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register at
    http://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg.

In addition, please submit a brief summary of your dissertation research
interests to Tomasz Obloj at obloj@hec.fr with the phrase “BPS Managing Your
Dissertation Workshop” in the title of the email.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
