    Dear BPS Community,

I got the assignment to teach an 8 hour class module on "value chain design and value chain analysis" in an EMBA strategy class.

As this is not my core area of research, any recommendations for a text book chapter that covers this well? Or does anyone even have a teaching plan to share?

What are good in-class exercises for an executive audience from diverse industries? And finally, your favorite case study to assign to the class before the session?

Thanks a lot for any input -- focused on value chain analysis & design (there are other modules on competitive analysis and firm analysis, competitive strategy etc.)

    Greetings from Germany,

    Hi
I have had excellent results using the frameworks set out in Chapter 4 of Rob Grant and Judith Jordan's book "Foundations of Strategy". Their approach for relating the value chain to cost and differentiation advantage resonates well with students, and evokes insightful and detailed analyses.

From the design point of view, you might find Chapter 6 of Cynthia Montgomery's 2012 book, "The Strategist" helpful. Her "Wheel of Strategy" has plenty in common with the value chain, and the advice she gives on designing it is certainly pertinent, even though it does not address the value chain directly.

Perhaps Chapter 2 ("The Value Chain and Competitive Advantage") of Michael Porter's _Competitive Advantage_ (1985) would be helpful. It's not a textbook, but it is where the idea originated.
