    Collaborative Capitalisms: Building Community Capacity for Social Innovation

    Offsite in UBC Robson Square- Room C150, 800 Robson St. (between Hornby and Howe Streets)

     

    This workshop session, sponsored by a broad consortium of Academy divisions, considers new approaches to business globally that reflect a repurposing of market-based capitalism to create shared or public benefits. Together we will investigate how infrastructures for alternative business approaches emerge from the activities of actors in local communities and engage in debate over key questions, such as:

        Is significant widespread change in capitalism necessary for alternate approaches to thrive?

        Can bottom up efforts generate widespread change in the conventions of market capitalism? 

        Can changes in capitalism evolve naturally or is structured advocacy or social movement required?

     

    The workshop format will be highly interactive, with a mix of research insights from various alternative capitalism efforts around the globe as well as ample opportunity for discussion and debate. We will crowdsource insights about research questions, theoretical lenses, and empirical approaches suitable for work in this area, and support development of the community of scholars interested in these issues.

     

    Empirical research to be presented includes:

    Creating a conscious capitalism ecosystem in Cascadia (Tracy Thompson, Jill Purdy and Marc Ventresca)

    Organizing to establish an on-shore community-owned wind farm (Helen Haugh)

    Occupy London stock exchange (Shaz Ansari and Juliane Reinecke)

    Community-based vs. minimalist models of micro finance (Kamal Munir)

    Community land trusts in British Columbia (Ana Maria Peredo)

    Business incubators in post-industrial Detroit (Suntae Kim)
