When firms alter their scope, they make decisions which fundamentally influence the internal organization of their existing operating units. A critical success factor in this domain is a firm's ability to align and adapt its tasks, routines and processes to improve coordination between operating units. This PDW examines how changes in firm scope influence the present and future internal organization of the firm. Key topics include analyses of how firms align business units, minimize coordination costs, and manage organizational adaptations. The goal of the PDW is to bring together a community of scholars studying horizontal and vertical diversification, both in the interest of sharing existing research ideas and facilitating future connections. This will be accomplished through a combination of presentations of research papers; topical talks, which discuss a body of research on specific research topic; commentaries and panel discussions on broad research themes; and a capstone plenary discussion providing a high-level perspective on research on firm scope.
