  • 1.  Neo-institutionalism as a theory of strategic management

    Posted 06-28-2007 07:39

Dear BPS community (apologies for cross-postings),

We are presently conducting a meta-analysis of neo-institutional theory, the research tradition associated with the seminal work of DiMaggio and Powell (1983, American Sociological Review, 4085 cites on Google Scholar). The theory was originally developed to explain isomorphism – or similarity – across firms in a given organizational field. An important aim of our work is to assess neo-institutionalism's qualities as a theory of strategic management, capable of explaining performance differentials between compliant and defiant firms sharing an organizational field. To make our assessment as inclusive and reliable as possible, we need your help.

If you have performed one or several studies in the area of neo-institutional theory, please be so kind as to share your findings with us. We welcome both (1) studies testing the effect of coercive, mimetic, and/or normative institutional pressures on isomorphism, as well as (2) studies testing the subsequent effect of isomorphism on substantive performance (e.g., higher stock market valuation) or symbolic performance (e.g., better corporate reputation). You can send your published articles, working papers, or unpublished dissertation chapters to either of the e-mail addresses listed below. All eligible studies will be included in the analysis, and cited in the final version of our paper.

Thank you for considering our request! With warm regards,

    Pursey Heugens

    Hi,

I'm curious to know the status of the meta-analysis you are conducting. Do you have a working paper to date?

    Thanks.

    Hi Ariel,

We indeed have a working paper version of our meta-analysis of institutional theory, which we will gladly share with BPS-L subscribers upon request.

Importantly, to minimize nuisance to other members, please approach me directly at pheugens@rsm.nl rather than respond to the list as a whole.

    All the best,

    Pursey
