Call for Participants: BPS Dissertation Consortium
Friday, August 12, 2011, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm*
The BPS Division will sponsor a Dissertation Consortium during the pre-conference period of the 2011 AOM Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The consortium complements the traditional BPS Doctoral Consortium and is intended for students who will be on the job market during the 2011-2012 academic year (i.e., for jobs beginning in Fall 2012).
The Dissertation Consortium provides an opportunity for students to present brief summaries of their dissertation research to a distinguished group of faculty and peers, and to receive feedback from this group in an informal setting. The co-chairs of the faculty panel for this year's Consortium are Bennet Zelner (Duke University) and Michael Jensen (University of Michigan). Other faculty panelists include Martine Haas (Wharton), Wesley Sine (Cornell), Jerker Denrell (Oxford), Gonçalo Pacheco-de-Almeida (NYU), and Kira Fabrizio (Duke).
Priority for admission to the 2011 Dissertation Consortium will be given to students who (1) have completed drafts of their job market papers, and (2) have not previously attended the regular BPS Doctoral Consortium. However, any BPS doctoral student who expects to enter the job market and graduate during the 2011-2012 academic year (and who is not applying to the 2011 Doctoral Consortium) may apply. Interested students should apply via email to Nancy Gump (Bennet Zelner's administrative assistant) at ngump@duke.edu<mailto:ngump@duke.edu> by May 31st, 2011.
The application should include:
1. A cover letter that (a) states that the applicant is applying to the BPS Dissertation Consortium only (and not to the BPS Doctoral Consortium), (b) certifies that the applicant will attend the BPS Dissertation Consortium if accepted, and (c) explains why the Dissertation Consortium is the best fit for the applicant.
2. The most current version of the applicant's job market paper from his or her dissertation (i.e., not the applicant's dissertation proposal, but rather a focused part of the dissertation including data and ideally some preliminary results).
3. The applicant's current CV.
Additionally, each applicant should have his or her dissertation chairperson send a separate email to nominate the applicant and verify that the applicant is expected to enter the job market and graduate during the 2011-2012 academic year.
All applicants will be notified of admission decisions by the end of June 2011.
* There will be a hosted dinner for consortium participants on Thursday, August 11.

Call for Participants: BPS Doctoral Consortium
August 11-13, 2011
The Business Policy and Strategy Division will sponsor a doctoral consortium during the pre-conference period of the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in San Antonio, Texas. The objectives of the consortium are to support mid- to late-stage doctoral students in business policy and strategy as they shape their dissertations, to give them a chance to meet and interact with some of their future colleagues, and to enhance their scholarship, teaching and overall development. To qualify for the consortium, a candidate must be in the proposal stage of his or her dissertation with plans to defend the dissertation proposal by September 30, 2011. The consortium will be held on Thursday, August 11 from 6 pm to 9 pm, Friday, August 12 from 8 am to 6 pm and on Saturday, August 13, from 8 am to 1pm.
The 2011 consortium co-chairs are Benjamin Campbell (The Ohio State University) and Samina Karim (Boston University). The faculty panel includes: Gautam Ahuja (University of Michigan), Juan Alcacer (Harvard University), Rich Bettis (University of North Carolina), Adelaide Wilcox King (University of Virginia), Rahul Kapoor (Wharton), Anita McGahan (University of Toronto) and Lourdes Sosa (LBS).
Interested doctoral candidates should apply in writing by May 31, 2011 by submitting:
1) a cover letter stating: a) that you are applying to the BPS Doctoral Consortium, b) your primary division of interest is Business Policy and Strategy, and c) you commit to accept an invitation to only one doctoral consortium at the 2011 AOM meetings. Please also indicate in this letter the number of years you have participated in your PhD program, your dissertation proposal defense date (on or before Sept. 30, 2011); and why the BPS Doctoral Consortium is the best fit for you.
2) a nomination letter from your dissertation chair; the letter should verify that the candidate is working on his/her dissertation proposal and confirm the candidate's dissertation proposal defense date.
3) a current CV (1 page maximum).
4) a summary/abstract of your dissertation proposal with 3-5 keywords identified at the end of the abstract (2 page maximum).
Please email your application to Samina Karim (samina@bu.edu<mailto:samina@bu.edu>) with the phrase "2011 BPS Doctoral Consortium Application" in the subject line. The preferred format for items 3 and 4 above is a single Word document, with the items presented in the order listed and using the candidate's last name as the file name (e.g., Campbell-cv-abstract.doc). Please do not send these documents in PDF format. Providing us with items 3 and 4 in a word document allows us to easily create a handout summarizing each participant's information for distribution to consortium participants. Item 2 may be submitted by the candidate along with the other documents, or separately by the dissertation chair, in either Word or PDF format. Any questions concerning the Consortium may be addressed to Samina Karim (samina@bu.edu<mailto:samina@bu.edu>) or Benjamin Campbell (campbell@fisher.osu.edu<mailto:campbell@fisher.osu.edu>). Participants will be notified of their selection in late June, 2011.
