Interactive Symposium: Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship (ONE, ENT, SIM)

    Date: Monday, Aug 8 2016

    Time: 11:30AM - 1:00PM

Location: Anaheim Marriott in Orange County Ballroom 1

This symposium-an AOM Emerald Best International Symposium Award Finalist-features eight, highly developed and interrelated papers.  Following 3-5 minutes of opening remarks from the co-chairs, the authors of each of the papers will give a 5 minutes (5 slides) overview of their studies.  This 45-minutes part will lead to interactive, three theme-focused discussions with substantial emphasis on audience engagement.

    The theme-focused discussions are:

Theme 1: Policies, Hybrid Firms, and Effectuation (authors: Hunt & Fund; York, O'Neil, & Sarasvathy; and Akemu, Whiteman, & Kennedy; discussant; Michael Russo).

Theme 2: Rhetoric and Social Issue Selling (authors: Waldron, Fisher & Pfarrer; and Alt & Craig; discussant; Dev Jennings).

Theme 3: Stakeholders and Crowdfunding (authors: Shevchenko, Lévesque, & Pagell; Crucke & Knockaert; and Calic & Mosakowski; discussant; Johanna Mair).

The theme-focused discussions allow the audience and authors to engage; here are three prompt questions:

    1.            What are the main takeaways from each paper?

    2.            What key research and practical questions should the domain ask and why?

    3.            What research designs and practices are called for to address the above questions?

    The Recapped Timeline:

    1. Co-Chairs to articulate the purpose of the format of the symposium: 3-5 minutes.

    2. Paper Presentations: 40 minutes (8 papers x 5 minutes each).

    3. Transition into groups: 3-5 minutes.

    4. Theme-focused (group) Discussions: 45 minutes.

Discussant: Johanna Mair, Hertie School of Governance

Environmental issues, poverty, inequality, corruption and social discontent are intricately linked with business activity, and as such, they cannot be disentangled or addressed in isolation. The needs to understand the Earth and its limited resources, security for humankind and justice for society mean that the demand for social science knowledge is increasing. The fact that sustainability and ethics are intertwined with the concepts of business and organizations (including NGOs) is no longer new. Indeed, ethical choices are critical to any business activity and thus influence how startups, small firms, medium enterprises, and large, multinational corporations-whether those are for profit or not- influence the sustainability of the environment and society. We actually suggest that sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship triangulate and give meaning to every ecological consideration, social value, and economic opportunity. The goal of the symposium, then, is to advance knowledge about the meaning and intersection of sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship.
