    "mid(dle)- range theory".

    How about: "théorie générale" for grand theory and "théorie à portée intermédiaire" for mid-range theory?

    I think the terms would be 'grande ou moyenne portee' (add accent aigu on the 1st e in 'portee'). So:
    GT: Grande Theorie (ou Theorie a Grande Portee)
    MRT: Theorie Intermediaire (ou Theorie Moyenne Portee)
