If you're interested in non-market strategy, corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, non-profits, or just the impact of business on society in general, we invite you to attend our symposium at AoM 2017!
# 1287: Strategies of Social Impact
Time: Monday, Aug 7; 3 - 4.30 pm
Location: Hyatt Regency; Hanover Hall E
Co-sponsors: BPS, PNP
The symposium brings together four papers that examine strategic actions undertaken to address social issues by for-profit firms-including corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate philanthropy, impact investing, and partnerships with non-profits. Using formal models, large-sample empirical analysis, and randomized experiments, these studies examine the social impact of such strategic actions, i.e., they examine not only whether such actions are financially viable, but whether they are socially beneficial. All four studies stress the heterogeneity of outcomes from socially responsible strategies, and emphasize that while there are certainly conditions where such actions may benefit both the firm and society, there are also conditions under which such activities may prove socially inefficient or harmful, or where the value created from such strategies may be appropriated largely by the shareholders of the for-profit organization. The symposium thus showcases new directions in research on strategic actions that lie at the interface between public and private interests, highlighting the need to consider the social impact of such strategies, as well as the use of cutting-edge approaches to enhance the rigor of work in this important and growing area.
