Resources, Capabilities, And Competitive Heterogeneity: Empirical
Research Workshop
When: Friday, Aug 11 2006 4:15PM - 6:30PM
Where: Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Marquis - Salon IV
Sponsor(s): (BPS, OMT, RM)
A common issue in contemporary strategic management research involves
competitive heterogeneity and its sources. Specifically, what are the
sources of such persistent performance differences among firms? To help
advance empirical research in this area, the BPS Division is sponsoring a
Professional Development Workshop at the 2006 Academy of Management
meeting for scholars doing empirical work in the domains of the RBV,
Dynamic Capabilities, and Competitive Heterogeneity. This PDW will allow
researchers interested in these domains to receive advice and feedback
from senior scholars on their ongoing and future empirical research
projects through roundtable discussions. Panelists for this PDW include:
Thomas Brush, Doug Miller, Michael Leiblein, Tammy Madsen, Glenn Hoetker,
Laura Poppo, Cathy Maritan, and Thomas Mellewigt.
This is an open session and pre-registration is not required.
Participants who are interested in getting targeted feedback on their
work, however, are encouraged to submit extended abstracts (5 to 10 page
paper overview) of empirical working papers that examine the roles of
resources and/or capabilities in firm performance and competitive
heterogeneity. Extended abstracts should be submitted to Craig Armstrong
at
carmstrong@utsa.edu by July 1, 2006. Please include your rank order
preference of three panelists from whom you would like to receive
comments. Participants should bring 5-10 copies of their extended
abstracts to share with the roundtable participants and/or be prepared to
provide a 3-5 minute overview of their paper at the session. Please
direct any inquiries about this PDW to its organizers: Craig Armstrong
(
carmstrong@utsa.edu), Paul Drnevich (
dren@purdue.edu), and Katja
Nothnagel (
Katja.Nothnagel@gmx.de).
This PDW will take place on Friday August 11th from 4:15 PM to 6:30 PM
immediately following, and in the same room as, the Future of the RBV
PDW. Because of this, the competitive heterogeneity PDW will be open to
anyone interested in participating in the roundtable discussions of the
submitted working papers and related discussion topics. After the
panelists have introduced themselves and their topic areas, panelists and
participants will engage in roundtable discussions centered on the
panelists specific areas of expertise. The session will close with a
wrap up in which each panelist will summarize the observations and lessons
learned from his or her tables discussion.
Participants and Panelists are invited to continue the discussions
informally over drinks and/or dinner at various local venues following the
session.
