Linking Formal Organization and Informal Social Structure
If you are interested in social networks, organization design, organizational adaptation, and innovative methods to bring these topics together, you will enjoy our showcase symposium in Atlanta!
The starting point of our symposium is that formal and informal structures have been investigated by separate research streams, but we know intuitively that these structures are linked: we know that formal structures such as organizational boundaries, hierarchy, and physical workspace constrain how people interact, and we also know that people's interactions deviate in several ways from the formal structure. This means that we can generate important insights (and potentially avoid significant biases in our studies) by investigating these structures simultaneously.
Join us on Monday, August 7th at 4.45PM in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis (Marquis M302) for four presentations and an extensive discussion of how the interplay between formal and informal structures affects organizations, and of the future opportunities for research on this topic.
