We have assembled a diverse group of senior scholars from a number of different institutions with one thing in common; we all had the privilege and honor of working with Paul Bierly at various stages of his academic career from his doctoral training at Rutgers University to his contributions as a senior faculty member at James Madison University and work as a Representative at Large in the TIM Division. Paul Bierly passed away on July 4, 2013. The purpose of this PDW is to reflect upon Paul's many contributions to the Academy with emphasis on lessons learned from our interactions with Paul and ways those lessons can benefit other scholars at all stages of an academic career.
Why this PDW Should be of Interest to Scholars at All Career Stages
Academic research is a long and often tedious process. Paul Bierly was an accomplished scholar with a large body of work that is in areas of keen interest especially to BPS and TIM members. This PDW with its eclectic mix of senior scholars will discuss their collaborations with Paul and how those collaborations resulted in successful research outcomes and, equally important, in having fun along the way. We will also discuss changes one often experiences as an academic as they progress from doctoral student, to Assistant Professor, to tenured Associate, and eventually to Full Professor and Director of various programs and/or Centers and Institutes.
Topics covered in this PDW will include the following: 1) Developing a Research Design – Paul Bierly's early works as an exemplar, 2) The Art and Science of Publishing a Research Paper: Illustrating various stages of the review process in academic journals from Bierly, Damanpour, and Santoro, 2009, 3) Reflecting on One of Paul's Academic Projects, 4) Linking Theory to Practice in TIM Research – Content and Process Lessons from Our Collaborations with Paul, 5) Paul Bierly's Wisdom – Flourishing, Faith and Fun, and 6) Building an Intellectual Community – How Not Taking Yourself Too Seriously, Liking Everyone, and Pivoting Toward Professional Service Can Help You and Others.
We will then engage the audience with a panel discussion and conclude with thoughts for moving forward.
Should you have any questions, feel free to contact Mike Santoro at: mds8@lehigh.edu.
Thanks,
Mike
