  • 1.  "Important" BPS Journals article

    Posted 03-03-2006 17:02
I recall an article a few years ago that discussed the "important" or "top" journals in our field. Its merits have been subsequently discussed on this forum before. The journal list in the article seemed a little longer than the ones BPS include on their Division Journal Survey 2003 (posted on the BPS site). Is anyone familiar with the article I am talking about (or the journals contained on that list)? Take care Myles

Anyone thinking about "lists" of journals should see these two articles:

McWilliams, A., Siegel, D.S., & Van Fleet, D.D. "Scholarly Journals as
Producers of Knowledge: Theory and Empirical Evidence Based on Data
Envelopment Analysis." Organizational Research Methods, Vol. 8, No. 2
    (2005), 185-201.

    Van Fleet, D.D., McWilliams, A. & Siegel, D.S., "A Theoretical and
Empirical Analysis of Journal Rankings: The Case of Formal Lists."
    Journal of Management, Vol. 26, No. 5, (2000), 839-861.

Check out Bill (William) Starbuck's Impact Ratings (NYU). Kim Boal (Texas
Tech) is another substantial name in this type of work, although for
entrepreneurship journals. My Google search on Kim Boal located the following
site at St. Louis University which gives more leads --

There is also a comprehensive ranking of all journals in the management
field done by Anne Wil Harzing from the University of Melbourne in
Australia.....It is certainly worth a skim through.

    Netters,

    Another recent article:

Podsakoff, P.M., MacKenzie, S.B., Bachrach, D.G., & Podsakoff, N. 2005. The influence of management journals in the 1980s and 1990s. Strategic Management Journal, 26: 473-488.

    Myles,

Here are three articles that come to mind:

    1) A Revealed Preference Study of Management Journals' Direct Influences
    Alireza Tahai; Michael J. Meyer
    Strategic Management Journal > Vol. 20, No. 3 (Mar., 1999), pp. 279-296

    2) The Development of Strategic Management: Journal Quality and Article Impact

Richard H. Franke; Timothy W. Edlund; Frederick Oster, III
Strategic Management Journal Vol. 11, No. 3 (Mar., 1990), pp. 243-253

    3) Besides these, Ian Macmillan wrote three papers in SMJ - 1987, 89,
and 91 on the same area

    Hope these help,
