    CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

    COMPETITIVE STRATEGY TEACHING WORKSHOP

    Saturday, November 5th, 2011

    2:00 – 5:00 PM

    Submission deadline: August 15, 2011

The Competitive Strategy Interest Group is pleased to announce the first annual CSIG Teaching Development Workshop, scheduled for the Saturday afternoon before the start of the SMS

International Conference in Miami, Florida (USA). This will be the first in a series of annual workshops focusing exclusively on best teaching practices in the competitive strategy domain. In

this session, top strategy scholars will present ideas and perspectives on teaching core competitive strategy topics. Our hope is that this will become a popular forum for developing our membership's teaching competencies.

Competing within an industry of close competitors lies at the heart of strategy. Whether teaching a strategy survey course or a focused competitive strategy class, the discussion of competitive

strategies represents a core objective. Instructors have various concepts available to them, including Porter's generic strategies and other theoretical approaches to competitive advantage. The inaugural workshop is co-chaired by Todd Alessandri (Northeastern U.) and Tom Moliterno (U. of Massachusetts) and includes a great panel of faculty including: Tammy Madsen (Santa

Clara U.), Joe Mahoney (U. of Illinois), Margie Peteraf (Dartmouth), and Gianmario Verona (Bocconi U.).

Our faculty four panelists will kick off the 3-hour session with an introductory plenary discussion of approaches to teaching different theoretical perspectives on competitive strategy across student audiences. Featured topics will include: Traditional Approaches to Teaching Competitive Advantage (J. Mahoney), Leveraging the Value-Cost Framework (T. Madsen), Teaching Resource-Based Perspectives (M. Peteraf), and Global Perspectives on Teaching Competitive Strategy (G. Verona). Breakout sessions will follow the plenary, where participants will discuss and apply the information presented by the panelists to a specific level of teaching (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, executive).

Interested participants are asked to pre-register by submitting one of the following: an existing course syllabus, a draft syllabus, a course outline, or a set of questions/challenges related to

teaching competitive strategy. These submissions will be used to assist us in planning the breakout sessions. Deadline for pre-registration and submissions is August 15, 2011. Please send your submission, or any questions to csig.teaching@gmail.com. Participants will be notified by September 1, 2011.

We hope you will join us for this new and exciting workshop!
