    Dear Fellow BPS members,

I would like to draw your attention to a special caucus session for Board/Executive researchers on Monday, August 8 during the AOM meeting in Anaheim (see below for more details). The purpose of this caucus will be to discuss solutions for the data challenges faced by Board/TMT/CEO researchers and to stimulate new ideas for research/collaborations.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the caucus organizer, Whitney Douglas Fernandez, at wfernandez@mail.sdsu.edu. Safe travels to Anaheim and hope to see many of you at the caucus session!

AOM Caucus: Getting "Inside" the Boardroom-Overcoming Data Challenges to Develop Impactful Governance Research

    Monday, August 8, 1:15PM - 2:45PM at Anaheim Convention Center in 213A

    Abstract

Boards of directors (hereafter boards) and executives constitute two critical components of the "corporate governance triad" that set the strategic agenda for organizations. Accordingly, management scholars have devoted a great deal of effort to understanding how the characteristics, structure, and processes of boards and executive teams affect the strategic direction and success of the firms they lead. Despite the important insights generated from extant research, there remain many unanswered questions and shortcomings in this body of literature, many of which can be attributed to the inherent challenges associated with obtaining primary data for these studies. Most governance research utilizes secondary data due to the difficulty associated with generating adequate responses from direct inquiries of boards and executives. While some studies have been successful in gaining useful insights via traditional methods of accessing primary data, governance scholars will need to develop innovative and non- traditional methods moving forward in order to expand our understanding of how boards and executives create meaning and value for the firms they serve. This caucus will serve as an opportunity for scholars doing governance research to come together and share innovative ideas for moving the corporate governance research agenda forward in spite of inherent methodological issues. The goal of this caucus will be to stimulate new ideas for impactful governance research, help researchers find innovative ways to gain access to the necessary data to execute existing research ideas, and foster collaboration within the corporate governance research community.
