The UCL School of Management, University College London, offers fully-funded, five-year bursaries for the MRes/PhD programme (http://www.mgmt.ucl.ac.uk/phd), starting in September 2019.
University College London (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/), founded in 1826, consistently appears at the top of global university rankings. It hosts a vibrant community of scholars that spans across all fields of research, and includes numerous Nobel Prizes among its past or present faculty and graduates.
At the School of Management, PhD students pursue their studies in one of the Operations & Technology, Strategy & Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Analytics, Organisations & Innovation, and Finance, Accounting & Economics groups. All five groups offer a unique education and research experience to a small number of highly motivated students, with the intent of preparing them for scholarly careers at the highest level.
The Organization & Innovation Group share a common interest in the social psychology of individuals, teams, social networks, and processes within organizations. Topics of interest include creativity, innovation, leadership, negotiations, personality, decision-making, cooperation and competition. Our methods for data collection and analysis are diverse, including survey research, interviews, social psychology experiments, inductive qualitative research, multi-method field studies, and network analyses. Despite this diversity, there is a common focus on understanding individual and team outcomes within organizations.
The Strategy & Entrepreneurship Group is interested in understanding what makes firms successful and what leads to the formation of new businesses. Topics of interest include digitization, big data analytics, machine learning, information environment, platform ecosystems, new organizational forms, learning, innovation, competition, interorganizational relationships, corporate strategy, entrepreneurial strategy, entrepreneurship for development, and social innovation.
The programme consists of five years of full-time study, starting with one year of courses registered as MRes. These courses provide rigorous methodological training to prepare students for their PhD research. Along with the School's courses, students usually take some of those offered by other UCL departments (e.g., Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology) and other schools in the London area.
Our highly selective and small-sized programme ensures that each student receives personal attention and guidance from our faculty members throughout their doctoral study. Our students also benefit from the rich and comprehensive training opportunities offered by the Doctoral School of the University College London (http://www.grad.ucl.ac.uk/).
We encourage highly motivated, ambitious students from a wide variety of backgrounds (e.g. engineering, economics, business, mathematics/statistics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, among others) to apply to our programme.
The deadline for application is 15 February 2019. Applications may be considered after this date, but we expect to allocate most bursaries to applications received within the deadline.
