    2023 STR Emerging Scholar Award

The STR Emerging Scholar Award recognizes a promising scholar who has established a research record of exceptional quality early in their career, has a notable publication record, and has already demonstrated an impact on the field of strategic management.  Candidates were judged by the relevance, academic contribution, theoretical and methodological rigor and practical implications of their work.  The award is bestowed upon a winner in odd numbered years (i.e., every other year).

The Emerging Scholar Award recipient is selected by a committee of former STR Division Chairs.  The Division would like to thank this year's committee: Rajshree Agarwal (University of Maryland), Nicholas Argyres (Washington University in St. Louis) and Joseph Mahoney (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).

The 2023 STR Emerging Scholar Award goes to Phebo Wibbens!

Phebo Wibbens is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at INSEAD. His research focus is formal and simulation modeling of the interaction between competitive environments and long-term firm performance. He teaches the MBA elective on M&A and corporate strategy as well as PhD courses on competitive strategy and time series econometrics. Phebo received his PhD from Wharton in addition to MSc degrees (cum laude) in mathematics and physics from the University of Groningen. Prior to joining academia, he worked at Bain & Company in Amsterdam and Boston.

Phebo's work has elicited the following comments from leaders in the field of strategic management: "His sole-authored work includes papers that are the first to conceptualize the resource-based view of the firm in terms of Markov chains, and to model resource dynamics using this approach." And Phebo has "demonstrated ability to contribute new theory, to thoughtfully craft new measurements central to strategy, and to guide others in the field toward the choice of better methodological approaches." Finally, the awards committee commented that "Phebo's research promises to have a significant impact on strategic management research, and to make him a future leader in the field."

Please join the STR Division in congratulating Phebo for the Emerging Scholar Award!
