    Friends of Strategy Science,

We are pleased to announce the 2023 Strategy Science Best Paper Award has been given to:

    Mary Benner and Joel Waldfogel
    for their paper
    "The Song Remains the Same?
Technological Change and Positioning in the Recorded Music Industry,"
    Strategy Science 1:3, pp.129-147, published in 2016.

From the comments of the awards committee:

"This superb paper examines how firms in the recorded music industry responded to fundamental technical change in the form of digitization. The answer provides a fascinating and persuasive story regarding repositioning by different types of incumbent firms-major and minor record labels--which depended on each type of firm's pre-digitization resources and capabilities and resulted in increased differences between the positions taken by each of the types of firms.

This paper is an outstanding example of a careful and thoughtful large sample empirical analysis that addresses central questions in the strategy field. The paper is a great (aspirational) example of what we would like to see in large sample studies where difficult and important strategy problems are tackled with empirical rigor, deep industry knowledge, and creativity."

Thank you to this year's awards committee: Dennis Yao, Dan Levinthal, and Giovanni Gavetti.

We invite you to enjoy this paper and share it with your colleagues, as well as connect with us on LinkedIn and follow us on Twitter.
    Sincerely,

    Todd Zenger
