    2025 STR Emerging Scholar Award

The STR Emerging Scholar Award recognizes a promising scholar who has established a research record of exceptional quality early in their career, has a notable publication record, and has already demonstrated an impact on the field of strategic management.  Candidates were judged by the relevance, academic contribution, theoretical and methodological rigor and practical implications of their work.  The award is bestowed upon a winner in odd numbered years (i.e., every other year).

The STR Emerging Scholar Award recipient is selected by a committee of former STR Division Chairs.  The Division would like to thank this year's committee: Tim Folta (University of Connecticut), Michael Leiblein (Ohio State University) and Chris Zott (IESE).

The 2025 STR Emerging Scholar Award goes to Hyunjin Kim!

Hyunjin Kim is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at INSEAD. Hyunjin's research examines how firms can manage data and algorithms to improve their strategic decision-making, and how these technologies change how firms compete and build competitive advantage. Her research has received funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Foundation for Human Behavior. She received her bachelor's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University, and holds an M.Sc from the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics. Prior to academia, she co-founded and managed an early-stage venture capital fund, and worked at Knewton and McKinsey & Company.

Hyunjin's work elicited the following comment from the award committee: "The committee is pleased to select Professor Hyunjin Kim as the 2025 STR Emerging Scholar from among a pool of highly deserving candidates. Professor Kim's research stands out in that it helps the field think differently about classic issues in the field of strategic management. In particular, her research highlights the critical role of competitor information in shaping firms' strategic decisions, demonstrating that access to such data can lead to performance-enhancing alignment with competitors. The findings underscore the importance of addressing managerial inattention and leveraging the growing availability of competitor data to refine strategic choices."

Please join the STR Division in congratulating Hyunjin for the STR Emerging Scholar Award! We will be celebrating Hyunjin at the July conference in Copenhagen and we hope that you will participate in the award session!
