Please join us for the AOM 2026 Panel Symposium "The Field of Strategic Leadership: Origins, Evolution, and Future."

    📅 Monday, Aug 3, 2026 | 4:45 PM – 6:15 PM ET
    📍 Sheraton, Salon 9

More than 40 years after Hambrick and Mason's seminal 1984 article introducing upper echelons theory, and three decades after Finkelstein and Hambrick's 1996 book, Strategic Leadership, the field of strategic leadership has reached an important moment for reflection. What have we learned about how executives, top management teams, and boards shape organizations? What conceptual, empirical, and methodological challenges remain? And where should strategic leadership research go next?

This panel symposium brings together leading scholars to examine the origins, evolution, and future of strategic leadership research. The discussion will revisit foundational ideas, assess major developments over the past several decades, and identify promising directions for advancing theoretical rigor, methodological innovation, and practical relevance.

    Panelists:
John R. Busenbark, University of Notre Dame
Joanna T. Campbell, University of Cincinnati
Donald C. Hambrick, Penn State University
    Timothy J. Quigley, IMD

    Organizer:
    Jiyeon Kang, Singapore Management University

The session will include brief remarks from each panelist, a moderated discussion, and an open Q&A with the audience. We hope many of you will join us for a lively and forward-looking conversation about the future of strategic leadership research.
