Open innovation (OI) is a management concept that describes the purposive management of knowledge flows across organizational boundaries. It has attracted significant attention from management researchers and has been studied using a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives.
Marking its twelfth edition in 2026, the PDW on Researching Open Innovation introduces an enhanced format shaped by cumulative insights and feedback from previous years. Building on the core of the open innovation (OI) concept, this year’s PDW theme, “Transcending our boundaries”, responds to the growing fragmentation of innovation management research and the increasing complexity of contemporary management challenges. As organizations face rapid technological change, sustainability pressures, and societal demands, advancing OI research requires closer engagement with other research domains and phenomena such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Grand Challenges, and Sustainability.
Inspiring keynote presentations, roundtable discussions moderated by expert facilitators, and developing individual OI bucket lists encompassing future research opportunities will be the main activities of the proposed PDW. These will focus on the opportunities and difficulties of multidisciplinary research collaboration, the major challenges and emerging research opportunities in OI research, and the exchange of insights across research communities. The PDW will leverage AI tools to compare research methodologies, theories, and shared challenges and opportunities. Pre-registration (by submitting a brief text outlining the participant’s research interests) is recommended for participation in the roundtables. Attendance remains open to all interested participants, subject to space availability.
The first version of this PDW was organized in 2014, and the earlier PDWs have resulted in a publication (with twenty-three involved authors) in Industry & Innovation https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13662716.2016.1240068.
