    Dear colleagues,

If you like causal inference, consider joining "The Methodological Frontier of Causal Inference" PDW in Boston.

    When: Sat, August 05, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

    Where: 302 Hynes

    Context

In the past decade, the community of management scholars has become more conscious of the importance of pursuing empirical evidence with a causal interpretation. However, the methodological frontier of causal inference has advanced, too, creating further research opportunities for management scholars. For example, the Instrumental Variable design has started to integrate knowledge from Machine Learning and Deep Learning; the Difference-in-Difference (DiD) and the Synthetic Control Method have fused to create the 'Synthetic DiD Estimator'; the Regression Discontinuity Design has become increasingly popular in longitudinal studies. This PDW aims to help participants appreciate the scope of application and distinctive features of innovative causal inference tools and to use these tools in practice.

    Structure of the PDW

The PDW has three components. The first component―open to all AoM-ers without registration―consists of a series of presentations on innovative causal inference tools from a selected group of speakers:

    1.     From scores to temporal cutoffs: the Regression Discontinuity in Time Design, by Nicolas Bastardoz (KU Leuven)

    2.     Synthetic Control Method applications to management research, by Luis Ballesteros (Boston University)

    3.     Beyond the 'vanilla' DiD setup, by Jost Sieweke (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)

    4.     Synthetic DiD, by Amirhossein Zohrehvand (Leiden University)

In the second component, a panel of journal editors comprising Raffaele Conti (ESSEC Business School / Strategic Management Journal), Sirio Lonati (NEOMA Business Schools / The Leadership Quarterly), Tobias Kretschmer (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München / Strategy Science), and Michael Withers (Texas A&M University / Organizational Research Methods) will discuss the recent methodological trends in causal inference. Like the first one, this component is open to all AoM-ers without registration.

In the third component, participants registered for the PDW will part-take in a round-table, paper discussion session. Each mentor―chosen among presenters and panelists―will be assigned a few projects sharing the same causal inference tool and provide participants with feedback comments on their work.

    Info and Registration

Send a message to causalinferencefrontier@gmail.com  to contact the PDW organizers, Simone Santoni and Jost Sieweke.

If you want to part-take in the round-table session, register using the Google form available at https://forms.gle/sSQr8hcPNnqPBv4A6 by July 26th. We will review the submitted applications and notify participants on a rolling basis.

We look very much forward to seeing you in Boston.

PS: We expect this PDW to have a follow-up mini-conference in mid-December (hosted by Bayes Business School in London). Stay tuned.
