Dear colleagues attending AOM Annual Conference in Copenhagen,

We (Vikas Aggarwal and Paul Nary) would like to invite you to a PDW on research opportunities in private equity and other forms of private capital, alternative governance, and ownership.

This PDW will feature a discussion panel led by senior academics, as well presentations of cutting-edge research, and we will finish with a social mixer where all participants can network and discuss their own research.

This PDW is open to all AOM attendees.

    Time: Friday, July 25, 2025 8:30-11:30AM
    Place: Bella Center C C1-M3

Please join us and share with colleagues, both faculty and students, who may be interested!

    More details below:

AOM COPENHAGEN 2025 PDW: PRIVATE EQUITY AND ALTERNATIVE OWNERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE: RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR STRATEGY SCHOLARS (Session 18517)

[AKA: The Eclipse of the Public Corporation, 2.0 – Through the Lens of Strategy]

Panelists: Gautam Ahuja (Cornell), Mary Benner (Minnesota), Francesco Castellaneta (SKEMA), Sam Garg (HKUST), Claudine Gartenberg (Wharton), Ivana Naumovska (INSEAD), Prothit Sen (ISB)

Organizers: Vikas Aggarwal (INSEAD), Paul Nary (Wharton)

Building off the success of two prior PDWs on this topic, during the AOM 2023 in Boston, and the AOM 2024 in Chicago, this PDW aims to continue to bring together a community of strategy and organizations scholars to better understand forms of ownership and governance under the umbrella of private capital. Private capital in its various forms, including venture capital (VC), private equity (PE), and search funds, represents an alternative or challenge to public corporate ownership. While many of the prominent scholars studying this topic have taken a finance-oriented lens, we feel that: (1) a strategy and organizations perspective would be of unique value in understanding alternative ownership and governance forms as phenomena; (2) the emergence and continuing evolution of various ownership and governance forms such as PE, VC, and search funds bear important implications for firm strategies and outcomes; and (3) using these contexts for research can help us more deeply understand key questions related to corporate scope, firm capabilities, corporate governance, alliances, ecosystems, and so on. Our perspective is that there can and should be significantly more work on these topics in the mainstream strategy, organizations, and management journals. This PDW will serve as a "primer" for scholars interested in using this industry as a context for strategy research. We will assemble a group of both junior and senior scholars engaged in cutting-edge research in this domain who can speak to potential research directions and current work in this area. In addition, we will include a set of roundtable discussions for scholars interested in doing research in this domain. The ultimate goal is to continue to develop a vibrant research community oriented around these issues.

See you there, and let us know if you have any questions!

    Paul and Vikas
