    Convergent/Discriminant Validity

    Dr. Mikko Rönkkö

    University of Jyväskylä

    Abstract

In this one-hour doctoral-level lecture, we explore the concepts of convergent and discriminant validity, two traditional forms of construct validity evidence in research. We start by defining discriminant and convergent validity, setting the stage for applying these concepts in empirical research. A key highlight of the lecture will be distinguishing convergent validity from reliability, which many current sources on methods omit to explain. We then transition into discussing the scenarios and contexts where demonstrating convergent and discriminant validity is needed and when these concepts can be ignored. The session will also provide an overview of the statistical techniques employed to assess discriminant and convergent validity evidence, offering attendees a practical toolkit for their research endeavors. Concluding the lecture, we will outline a systematic workflow for assessing and reporting convergent and discriminant validity, ensuring that researchers are equipped with the knowledge to communicate their findings effectively and transparently.

    Measurement of Firm Performance

    Dr. Trevis Certo

    Arizona State University

    Abstract

Firm performance represents arguably the most important construct in strategic management research. In this talk, I will summarize recent studies examining some of the empirical irregularities associated with measures of performance. In particular, I will discuss the issues associated with using performance variables measured with ratios in statistical models, the differences in how executives and strategy scholars tend to operationalize firm performance, and the extreme non-normality associated with firm performance measures. I close by providing recommendations for scholars examining firm performance in statistical models.
