     JOM AIM HIGH Mentoring Program

    DESCRIPTION

The AIM HIGH program is a 6-month long program with the goal of providing mentoring experiences to junior scholars, especially those who do not have access to more senior scholars. This program will match approximately 50 mentors-mentees in 2026.

    GOAL

Provide mentoring to junior scholars to help them develop skills related in reviewing, manuscript preparation, and 5-year career planning.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR THE AIM HIGH PROGRAM

The AIM HIGH pilot program is expected to begin on June 1, 2026 and end by November 30, 2026. The deadline to apply for the program is May 1, 2026.

    WHO IS ELIGIBLE

The AIM HIGH program aims to support assistant professors who lack adequate mentoring support, with special consideration for scholars at European institutions, Latin American scholars, and those at R2 or lower-ranked institutions. The program maintains flexibility to consider any candidate who can demonstrate a genuine need for mentoring support, ensuring inclusivity while maintaining focus on those with limited resources.

     WHO ARE THE MENTORS

Invited current JOM Editorial Review Board members (Associate and Full), former JOM Associate Editors and Editors, and other highly recommended scholars in the field.

WHAT DOES THE AIM HIGH PROGRAM ENTAIL

Below is a set of activities (listed in the steps) that mentors and mentees must agree to; the minimum requirements are that a mentee review a paper, the mentor provides feedback on the review, the mentee presents a manuscript for friendly review, the mentor provides feedback on the manuscript, the mentee presents a five-year plan, and the mentor provides feedback on that plan. The mentor and mentee may engage in any other conversations or activities as long as both sides consent. The mentee is responsible for initiating contact with their mentor and remaining flexible with their schedule when arranging meetings.

    AIM HIGH PROGRAM COMPLETION

After concluding the following suggested activities and successfully filling out the AIM HIGH completion survey, mentees will graduate from the AIM HIGH program. Both mentors and mentees will receive recognition for their participation in the AIM HIGH program.

Step 1: Match the mentee with a mentor

    ·         Mentee: Research the mentor, prepare a set of questions about (1) the mentor's research; and (2) concerns, issues, or advice you would like to receive from your mentor; (3) communicate with your mentor to set up a virtual meeting

    ·         Mentor: Find a past JOM paper or paper from another top journal that you were asked to review. Consider a list of guidelines about reviewing to share with your mentee (these can be shared verbally or written)

Step 2: Month 1: Virtual introductory meeting (approx. 1 hour)

    ·         Mentee: Ask your mentor the questions you have prepared

    ·         Mentor: (1) Answer the questions that the mentee asks; (2) provide the mentee with the manuscript you would like them to review (within 1-2 months); and (3) talk through the review guidelines

    Step 3: Months 2-3:

    ·         Mentee: Complete the review in the agreed-upon timeline and send it to the mentor; (2) Determine what manuscript you would like a friendly review on and what specifically you would like some guidance on; (3) set up a virtual meeting

    ·         Mentor: When the review from the mentee is received, evaluate it and prepare feedback to give to the mentee

Step 4: Month 3-4: Virtual meeting (approx. 1 hour)

    ·         Mentee: (1) Engage with the mentor as they provide review feedback to you; (2) provide your mentor with the manuscript you would like a friendly review on; (3) provide your mentor with specific issues that you would like feedback on.

    ·         Mentor: (1) Provide the mentee with feedback on their review

    Step 5: Month 4-5:

    ·         Mentee: (1) Create a 5-year plan (what you plan on doing with respect to research, service, teaching; prioritizing research projects; goals, actions, strengths, weaknesses) (2) send your 5-year plan to mentor before 3rd meeting; (3) set up a virtual meeting

    ·         Mentor: (1) Do a friendly review of the mentee's manuscript

    Step 6: Month 5-6: (approx. 1 hour)

    ·         Mentee: (1) Receive feedback on your manuscript and your 5-year plan; (2) ask questions about the manuscript, 5-year plan or anything else

    ·         Mentor: (1) Provide the mentee with a friendly review of their manuscript; (2) provide feedback to the mentee on their 5-year plan; have a discussion around their goals and future

Step 7: End of Month 6:

    ·         Mentee: (1) Update your 5-year plan based on the feedback you received; (2) Complete the AIM HIGH completion survey

    ·         Mentor: Complete the AIM HIGH completion survey
