Message from the STR Division Chair
2023 Research, Teaching, and Membership Engagement Activities
Michael Leiblein
The recent release of the Call for Submissions to the 2023 Academy of Management (AoM) annual meeting provides an opportunity to share with you this year's STR Division team and highlight several of the activities that we plan to provide this year.
One of the pleasures of serving the division is getting to know a group of STR officers, STR executive committee members, and STR sub-committee members that are working to enhance the strategic management field. Please click on this hyperlink (STR Team) to see the individuals striving to advance the creation and dissemination of strategic management research.
This year this group is planning several events before and during the AoM conference for the benefit of the strategic management field. These events include:
- STR Distinctiveness Conversations. Organized by STR EC members Philipp Meyer-Doyle, Mahka Moeen, Tomasz Obloj, and Richard Whittington, the STR division is supporting a series of public conversations involving faculty members from strategic management and adjacent fields of study. The intent of these conversations is to explore areas of commonality and distinctiveness in our research. By better understanding the assumptions, mechanisms, and insights provided by allied perspectives, we aim to create opportunities for greater collaboration and impactful research "in the seams" between the fields. We have planned conversations with prominent academics on topics including strategy and entrepreneurship, strategy and HR management, strategy and international business, strategy, and leadership, as well as strategy and organization theory. We will be sharing more information on these events through the STR Digest in the coming days, weeks, and months.
- STR Virtual Symposia: This same group will be helping to organize several virtual symposia this year. Our current slate includes discussions on topics including (1) Behavioral Strategy, (2) Corporate Strategy, (3) Knowledge, Learning, and Innovation, (4) Non-Market Strategy, (5) Open Strategy, and (5) Resources, Capabilities, and Strategic Factor Markets. Several scholars have already committed to sharing their insights about the current state and future research within these theoretical and topical areas.
- STR Teaching Events: The STR teaching committee is led by Division Chair-Elect Louise Mors. This year, Louise and her team will be offering virtual teaching events open to all members, in addition to updating the content on the STR Teaching tab on the STR website. On December 16th, EC member Elisa Alvarez-Garrido is organizing the first teaching event for the year. The event is titled "Integrating Strategy Teaching and Book Writing" and features Glenn Carroll, Tammy Madsen, and Jesper Sørensen.
- STR Global Workshops: Our Global Reps are working on several workshops this year including an STR virtual PDW for South America on December 7 and a Paper Development Workshop in Brazil on June 26 & 27 of 2023. In addition, we will be helping to support a workshop in Oceania on March 23 & 24 of 2023 organized by Ralf Wilden.
- STR Membership Engagement Activities: The STR membership engagement committee is led by Andy Wu. This year, Andy and his team will continue to offer sessions that not only connect our members but also help to develop skills. In addition to continuing their series on alternative career paths, they will be offering writing/reviewing workshops and productivity workshops among other events. On November 21, MEC member Tadhg Ryan-Charleton organized a fabulous session on "Research Setbacks and Career Inflection Points." This workshop will be available on the STR YouTube channel for those who could not attend the live session.
All events will be posted to the STR Calendar as they are finalized (available on our homepage and easily added to your Apple iCal or Google calendar), in addition to being advertised using the STR Daily Digest.
As discussed in the letter from STR Program Chair, Deepak Somaya, the planning for the 2023 August Annual Meeting is underway. AoM has announced that the 2023 Annual Conference will take place using an entirely in-person format. Additional details are provided in Deepak's letter. Please help ensure a robust meeting by signing up to review at AoM's reviewer sign-up system at https://review.aom.org/.
I would like to encourage you to start thinking about nominees for STR teaching and career awards we will bestow at the 2023 Annual Conference. Division Chair-Elect Louise Mors and the STR Awards Committee will be seeking your nominations this fall (Louise has previously posted about the awards process and will soon post more information about this year's awards).
Please also review the letter from STR's Past Division Chair, Heather Berry, regarding the process to nominate individuals to STR Leadership positions and specialized committees. The nomination process will commence in February of 2023.
I will be using the AOM "Announcement Widget" to communicate ongoing messages from your elected STR officers. These announcements (like this one) will appear at the top of the STR Daily Digest under the title "Announcements" (above the normal "Discussion" threads that include all member postings). I hope this helps to highlight STR leadership information in your inbox.
I look forward to seeing you at many STR events throughout the year!
