On behalf of the Behavioral Strategy IG at SMS, we are delighted to invite you to two Sunday panels at the SMS annual meeting. We look forward to a stimulating discussion and hope to see you in the audience.
Methodological Frontiers in Behavioral Strategy, 12 October, 8:00 AM - 9:15 AM, Golden Gate 6
This panel explores methodological innovations that promise to advance behavioral strategy research. As behavioral strategy theory continues to mature, new tools and approaches are needed to allow researchers to test theory with greater precision, depth, and creativity. The panel will showcase methodological approaches across a variety of approaches, including archival analysis, laboratory experiments, computational simulations, and qualitative inquiry. Leading scholars will highlight how these diverse methods can be used to investigate new questions in behavioral strategy. In doing so, we aim to inspire researchers to expand their methodological toolkits.
Panelists: Anjali Bhatt (HBS) on simulation methods, Arvind Karunakaran (Stanford University) on qualitative approaches, Ozgecan Kocak (Emory University) on extracting language and codes, and Oana Vuculescu (Aarhus University) on experimental methods
Politics and Coalitions in Organizations: Opportunities for New Research, 12 October, 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM, Golden Gate 6
Strategic decisions are frequently shaped by internal politics, competing interests, shifting coalitions, and truce. While early research in organization theory emphasized these dynamics, scholarly attention has since shifted. As a result, the study of internal political behavior and coalition dynamics, despite its centrality to strategy, has become a relatively overlooked area within the field.
This panel will bring together four scholars whose research examines political and coalitional dynamics as key forces in shaping organizational decisions and outcomes. Panelists will reflect on where the literature has been, how they have studied political and coalition dynamics, and why these topics deserve renewed focus. The session will begin with brief presentations from each panelist, followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.
Panelists: Vibha Gaba (INSEAD), Gabriel Szulanski (INSEAD), Scott Ganz (Georgetown), Mark Zbaracki (Ivey)
