While we prepare for the AOM Annual Meeting, we would also like to alert you to a Paper Development Workshop (PDW) we are hosting at the Strategic Management Society (SMS) Annual Conference in late September:

    Studying Emerging Technologies
    Saturday, September 30, 2023
    09:00h – 12:00h
Sponsored by the Entrepreneurship & Strategy and Knowledge & Innovation Interest Groups and Research Methods Community
    Application Required

The strategy field has benefitted from extensive research done on historical data connecting the birth of new technologies and their impact on firms and society. These days, with the rapid emergence of new technologies and the pressing questions from the business world, researchers might need to study new technologies as they emerge.

The session will include a panel discussion (one hour and fifteen minutes) and application-based roundtable discussions (one hour and forty-five minutes). In the first portion, five renowned scholars will share their experiences studying the recent emergence of new technologies. Among the six of them, they will exhibit a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods of studying startups and/or established firms tha fostered the emergence of various technologies. In the second portion, workshop participants will discuss their research and interests with panelists in roundtables. The roundtables will provide participants the opportunity to gain personalized feedback on their research ideas from faculty panelists.

Invited Panelists and Discussants: Kristina McElheran (University of Toronto), Florenta Teodoris (University of Southern California), Mahka Moeen (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Doug Hannah (Boston University), Erdem Dogukan Yilmaz (Erasmus University), Callen Anthony (NYU), Carmelo Cennamo (Copenhagen Business School)

Organized by: Florence Honore (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Timothy Ott (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Jacqueline Kirtley (University of Pennsylvania), Zhiyan Wu (Erasmus University Rotterdam)

Along with this outstanding panel, we will have interactive breakout groups to provide detailed paper feedback to accepted participants. Walk-ins are welcome for the first half of this workshop.

Proposals are due by July 31st.
