Organizations seek to create value for their stakeholders, yet evidence and experience consistently show that implementing strategy is more challenging and complex than choosing or formulating it. This special issue brings together 14 articles that examine the key challenges organizations face during strategy implementation and offer actionable solutions grounded in research and practice.
The articles span four broad categories of implementation issues:
· Internal implementation processes (3 articles)
· Implementation issues by firm type (5 articles)
· Providing direction for implementing strategy (4 articles)
· Macro settings for strategy implementation (2 articles)
Individually and collectively, the contributions offer insights relevant to scholars, educators, executives, and boards, highlighting concrete actions managers can take to support effective strategy implementation across a wide range of organizational contexts (e.g., family firms, MNEs, new ventures, platforms, informal economies).
The special issue edited by Duane Ireland and Mike Withers includes articles by leading scholars addressing topics such as resource orchestration in M&A, boards' roles in implementation, resistance and pivoting processes, mission statements, inclusive supply chains, and more.
