STR DOCTORAL AND DISSERTATION CONSORTIA OVERVIEW

    2023 Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia

The STR Division sponsored the 2023 Virtual Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia during the pre-conference period of the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management.

The STR Doctoral Consortium was for students in early stages of their PhD programs, and the STR Dissertation Consortium was for advanced students and PhD candidates on the 2023-2024 job market.

The 2023 Doctoral Consortium included three round-table breakout sessions where students received feedback on their dissertation ideas from faculty mentors and four panel sessions where faculty provided advice and answered questions about navigating the dissertation process, finding a job, building a research pipeline, and publishing in strategy journals. Claudine Gartenberg (University of Pennsylvania) and Joe Raffiee (University of Southern California) served as the co-chairs for the doctoral consortium.  Faculty mentors for the doctoral consortium included Mark DesJardine (Dartmouth), Tim Gubler (Brigham Young University), Yong Kim (Texas A&M University), Kwanghui Lim (Melbourne Business School), Arianna Marchetti (London Business School), François Neville (McMaster University), Wei Shi (University of Miami), Jasjit Singh (INSEAD), Sruthi Thatchenkery (Vanderbilt University), Tony Tong (University of Colorado, Boulder), Ulya Tsolmon (Washington University, St. Louis), Margarethe Wiersema (University of California, Irvine), and Cyndi Zhang (Singapore Management University).

The 2023 Dissertation Consortium included elevator pitch workshops and small group discussions.  These small groups, comprising a faculty advisor and students from different institutions, focused on discussing and helping develop the students' dissertation papers. Victor Bennett (University of Utah) and Hyunjin Kim (INSEAD) served as co-chairs.  Faculty mentors included Ron Adner (Dartmouth Tuck School of Business), Elisa Alvarez-Garrido (University of South Carolina), Annamaria Conti (IE Business School), Rebecca Karp (Harvard Business School), Sarah Kaplan (University of Toronto), Narae Lee (Singapore Management University), Mary-Hunter (Mae) McDonnell (Wharton Schol of Business), Stephan Meier (Columbia Business School), Amandine Ody-Brasier (McGill University), Susan Perkins (University of Illinois Chicago), Tim Quigley (University of Georgia), Joost Rietveld (University College London), Kulwant Singh (National University of Singapore)

Many thanks to the faculty mentors for sharing their time, enthusiasm, and expertise!

    2024 Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia

The STR Division will sponsor the 2024 Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia during the pre-conference period of the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management.

The 2024 STR Doctoral Consortium is for students in the early stages of their PhD programs and provides opportunities for participants to discuss their dissertation proposals in small groups with distinguished faculty and peers and to meet and interact with future colleagues. Panel sessions with faculty will cover the topics of managing a dissertation, building and maintaining a research pipeline, navigating the academic job market, and the process of publishing research in strategy journals. Joe Raffiee (University of Southern California) and Jillian Chown (Northwestern University) are the co-chairs for the 2024 Doctoral Consortium.

The 2024 STR Dissertation Consortium is intended for PhD candidates who will be on the job market during the 2024-2025 academic year, for jobs beginning in Fall 2025.  Participating students must have successfully defended their dissertation proposals and completed a draft of their job market papers.  The main focus of the 2024 Dissertation Consortium will be on providing participating students with an opportunity to discuss their job market papers and job market elevator pitches in small groups with distinguished faculty and peers.  Participants and faculty panelists will also explore issues including navigating the job market, developing a research pipeline, understanding the journal review process and learning to teach effectively. Seth Carnahan (Washington University, Olin) and Hyunjin Kim (INSEAD) are the co-chairs for the 2024 Dissertation Consortium.

Please look for details on how to apply for these consortia in the Spring STR Newsletter.  The application deadline will likely be in mid-May.  If you have questions, contact Joe Raffiee (joe.raffiee@marshall.usc.edu) for the Doctoral Consortium or Hyunjin Kim (hyunjin.kim@insead.edu) for the Dissertation Consortium.
