The Divergent Effect of Competition on Platforms: Deterring Recruits, Motivating Converts

Platforms often face competition. How does competition affect a platform's ability to attract contributions from complementors? Studying the competition between OpenStreetMap and GoogleMaps, we find that competition has a divergent effect on platforms: it decreases contributions from new recruits but motivates those who are already committed to contribute more.
