Would you like to learn more about the formal modeling in management research and hear the latest tips on the best practices for developing, writing, publishing and reviewing formal model papers? Would you like to understand how formal models can relate and be used with other methods in management research? The virtual live AOM PDW "Best Practices for Formal Modeling in Management Research" will bring together five scholars with broad and diverse experience in the use of formal models to answer these questions and provide participants the opportunities to directly interact with the panelists in an open discussion.

This PDW is aimed at PhD students and faculty who wish to improve their skills as consumers or producers of the formal models, as well as those who want to learn more about this method. The PDW is intended for a general audience and does not require prior modeling experience

The format of PDW (virtual format):

The PDW will be virtual and will consist of a 100-min panel session, a short break, and a 45-min breakout room session (breakout room requires pre-registration).

The 100-min panel session will address the following topics, followed by Q&As:

    • Comparing formal modeling with other methods (Michael Ryall)
    • Combining formal modeling with other methods (Aseem Kaul)
    • Connecting formal models to disciplinary languages (Veronica Cappelli)
    • Communicating formal models to a broader audience (Douglas Hannah)
    • Editors' perspectives on publishing formal models (Oliver Chatain)

It will be followed by a 45-min breakout room session where participants would be able to discuss with the panelists in small groups. There will be three breakout rooms:

    • Developing formal models (novice audience – little or no experience in formal modeling) – Olivier Chatain and Veronica Cappelli
    • Developing formal models (advanced audience – prior experience with formal modeling) – Michael Ryall
    • Publishing and reviewing formal models for top journals – Aseem Kaul and Douglas Hannah

    How to participate:

The PDW is a virtual synchronous live open session, taking place on August 7th, 2022, 9:00 – 11:30 am PDT (Seattle time).

    • Panel session is open to all registered participants. To participate in the panel session, please register using the AOM conference website (session 676): https://2022.aom.org/meetings/virtual/wY5tCGAuYX7ctnrEL
    •  To participate in the breakout room session, you will need to REGISTER SEPARATELY. Please email formalmodelaom@gmail.com with (1) your name and affiliation, (2) email address used for AOM, and (3) two breakout rooms that you would be most interested in joining, by August 2 EOD. We will have limited space in the breakout rooms, so the places and the preferences will be accommodated on the first-come, first-serve basis.
