STR 2023 Guth Distinguished Service Award
The STR William D. Guth Distinguished Service Award recognizes an STR member with at least 15 years of service to the field, who has made significant contributions to activities within the STR Division, the Academy of Management, and/or to the broader field of strategic management. Award criteria include editorial contributions at journals or of edited volumes of strategy research, significant contributions to the Academy of Management, conference organizing, administrative roles, or textbook authorship.
The 2023 STR Guth Distinguished Service Award goes to Anita McGahan!
Anita M. McGahan is University Professor and George E. Connell Chair in Organizations and Society at the University of Toronto. Her primary appointment is at the Rotman School of Management. Professor McGahan is also a Faculty Member and Senior Fellow at the Burnes Center for Social Change at Northeastern University; Senior Associate at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard University; and a past President of the Academy of Management. From 2014 to 2019, she was a faculty member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Opening Governance. Anita earned both her PhD and AM at Harvard University in two years. She holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School, where she received highest academic honors as a Baker Scholar. She also spent several years at both McKinsey & Company and Morgan Stanley & Company and was previously on the faculties of both Harvard Business School and Boston University. Anita's current research emphasizes entrepreneurship in the public interest and innovative collaboration between public and private organizations. She is also pursuing a long-standing interest in how firms overcome industry disruption to achieve breakthrough performance. Her recent work emphasizes innovation in the governance of technology to improve global health. Anita has been recognized for her dedication to the success of junior faculty and for her leadership in course development.
Anita has been dedicated to all aspects of the field of strategy and the Awards Committee picked Anita to receive the Guth Distinguished Service Award this year to recognize Anita for her outstanding service to the field of strategic management. Anita has been involved in many aspects of both the Academy of Management and Strategic Management Society organizations. Her contributions to STR and the field in general are significant. Back in 1999, Anita started by serving on the BPS research committee. Anita later served on the BPS executive committee and from 2004 she served on the elected officer track and was division chair of BPS from 2006 to 2007. Anita has served as Associate Editor for the business strategy division of Management Science and the Strategic Management Journal and has been or currently serves on the editorial board on most of the top journals in Strategy including SMJ, Strategic Organization, Strategy Science, AMJ, AMP, AMD, and AMR.
The many contributions by Anita to BPS, AoM and SMS have already been recognized with numerous awards. In 2010, she was awarded the Academy of Management BPS Division's Irwin Distinguished Educator Award. In 2012, the Academy conferred Anita with its Career Distinguished Educator Award for her championship of reform in the core curriculum of Business Schools, and in 2021, the Academy recognized Anita with its Career Distinguished Service Award for leadership in the Academy and other organizations. In 2018, Anita was awarded both the Inaugural Educational Impact Award and, with Michael E. Porter, the Dan and Mary Lou Schendel Best Paper Prize from the Strategic Management Society. With doctoral student Leandro Pongeluppe, she was awarded the Glueck Best Paper Award in 2021 from AoM and with former doctoral student Keyvan Vakili, she was awarded the AMJ's Impact Award in 2022. In 2012, she was elected a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society, and in 2015 she was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Management.
